And Robert Wise suggested that Ilia herself was actually a last-minute replacement navigator for the woman officer who died in the transporter accident, explaining Decker's surprise at seeing Ilia. Roddenberry's intent for the deceased female character may have been different, as in his novelization she was Vice Admiral Ciana, who had been in a temporary marriage contract with Kirk. And Kirk has a rather, um, sentimental reaction on seeing her on the comms some time before the transporter accident.

I saw the part about Kirk's wife and was surprised, I didn't know that bit of Beta canon existed, but I never thought much of Ilia being a replacement. That makes so much sense, as you'd think Decker, who was the Captain of the ship like 5 minutes earlier, would know who was coming onboard.

I remember reading it in the 90s, but I lost my copy over the years. I was struck by Rodenberry's vision of Kirk being something of a throwback and that's what made him the best choice for the role of Captain.

I'm surprised nobody has jumped in and provided additional detail on Kirk's reaction to seeing Ciana. Maybe that reference was a bit obscure. Or maybe everybody forgot it on purpose.

The film didn’t look finished in 1979. Successive viewing on TV and VHS looked even worse with it looking faded and washed out. The 2001 was a big improvement on every front. Now it will be finished and restored to full glory.

I’m eager to see it myself.

Your wording made it seem like Paramount approved a script that was only half written and the other half was pages taken straight from the TV pilot draft, that’s why I was confused.

Essentially, that is what I said, except it was two-thirds and one third. And have you compared the endings of "In Thy Image" and the shooting script of TMP? Yes, almost the same for the last third of the script, except Xon has been replaced by Spock.

Poor Thomas Warkentin, trying to do the LA Times Syndicate comic strip. The script he was given clearly showed the real Ilia returning at the end, so he included her in his first two post-TMP adventures.

there are many instances where the color grading ruins many of the original effects.

A matter of taste, because there are just as many examples where the colour grading of the 4K DE make dull scenes come alive, such as we can now see that patterns on the alien ambassadors' robes in San Francisco without looking them up on the LP inner sleeve, and the gorgeous details in the (previously-smoky, hazy, gloomy) V'ger flyover scenes.

It's good to see that our knack for finding fault and being disappointed in the most trivial details of something have not eroded or overtaken by being abnormally happy that we have a nice, new version of a film that was never "finished" properly as released.

I saw the part about Kirk's wife and was surprised, I didn't know that bit of Beta canon existed...

It dates back to the previous script, which had opened with Kirk swimming naked with a partner, Alexandra Keys. She then became Vice Admiral Lori Ciana and Roddenberry added her to the novelization of TMP. Since Ciana was never in the actual TMP script, there was nothing in the film to indicate that Kirk had any connection with the woman killed next to Sonak.

It looks good, but I think there might be another pass at it sometime in the future.

OK, I saw it on P+. It was fantastic. Love this movie and it hasn't looked this good since its original release on the big screen. And DE is a better edit than the original theatrical release. It should be the default for all future theatrical or home video releases.

I'm sorry to respond to this comment again, but it rubs me the wrong way, since it seems this project happened because of Paramount+.

Producer David C. Fein at TrekMovie said, "And Paramount+ were our wonderful saviors, who came in and said, 'Of course, let’s do it for Paramount+.' And I said, 'So long as we get our film negative, let’s go for it.' Paramount+ has been incredibly supportive and helped get the job going."

I'm about halfway through it. I'll be honest, this is not my favorite movie, and no amount of tinkering with the effects are going to change that. But it is part of the history of a franchise I care deeply for, so I want to give this new edition a fair shake. I can only take about thirty minutes at a time.

I'm not an expert on these things. I'm not doing a compare and contrast to previous versions of this film, but it looks pretty good for the most part. Colors are less drab this time around.

Looking ahead…I’ve often thought the Reliant vs Enterprise encounters in the nebula went on longer than we “saw” and a special feature for that remix would be to watch at every angle…incorporating the look of the stills ILM used that made venting plasma look fluid…not sparkles except when exhausted…the phaser hit on the roll bar not actually in the film.

If nothing else, that might make a fine Academy lecture on screen as characters in the benches confer.

They actually did much more than just tinkering with the visual effects. It's a totally different edit of the film. And, probably most impactful is that it has a totally new (and absolutely amazing) new sound mix.

Reading comments online it’s evident some people are predisposed to dismiss the 4K DE as just an upgrade in visuals. They trot out the same longstanding complaints without actually watching the new release.

Yeah. I admit I was late to the streaming game, but it was because I had cable and just didn't want to pay for streaming too.

And Paramount has been pretty good about releasing shows on hardcopy down the line. If you don't want to stream, fine. If you're patient you know Paramount will release it on Blu-Ray/DVD down the road once the show/movie has run it's course on streaming. They know when it comes to Star Trek they have a market for it so of course it'll come out on disc.

I'll take your word for it. As I said, I'm not doing a side by side comparison. I'm going by memory from the last time I watched the special edition. This new version hasn't changed my opinion of the story, which after all these years is pretty much set, but you're absolutely right about the sound. They did a really good job.
