TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

Is it possible for the Enterprise matte paintings to be... fixed with this restoration of the DE?
Which ones? How so? The infamous one from the end of the movie where the crew emerges from the hatch to walk to V'Ger is certainly going to be redone, it was already a fix from the old DE.

... I now realise that I have never seen the TMP director's edition.

This is what the scene looked like in the DE. The wide shot of the Enterprise replaced with CGI:

And the sideways shots of the people walking over the stepping stones, replaced with CGI:

Better perspective, but it looks very much like early 2000s CGI.

Edit: Uh, weird. There was a trailer, with a release date of April 5th, but it just got unceremoniously yanked. The Human Adventure is a little postponed.

Well, from what I saw on a first watch, it looked like there were a couple bonus fixes I hoped for that didn't make it in. The shot where the ship fires in the wormhole was still missing the light-trails. Also, the new V'Ger reveal seemed like a little much in terms of glows and lights. Still the recomposited original shots looked great, and the new ones we saw were properly color-corrected and weren't as blown-out as the earlier preview screengrabs.

I was going to watch it again with a pause button to see what else I could make out, but I guess I won't be doing that today.

Well, apparently not.

I did just find a mirrored copy, and saw that there were some trails added, but it wasn't as strong as in the original shots, so it was easy to miss (I'm guessing they didn't add them to the top half of frame so it didn't make the shot too hard to read around the torpedo itself, but that also means there aren't any light trails where you're actually looking). I was about to update my post just as your replied. So, as promised, some more detailed notes.

The shot of the asteroid exploding still has the camera slightly off to the wrong side of the ship, for those who noticed and brought it up so now we all have to notice.

The CG Earth they're using is a much better match to the paintings from '79 than the 2001 Earth model.

The rainbow tunnel in the forward-perspective warp-speed tunnel still disappears a couple frames after the flash.

The plasma-probe on the bridge has had the alignment between the left and right half of the background improved. It's not perfect, but you can't get blood from a stone. In addition to cropping in a touch and aligning the sides vertically, it looks like they fiddled with the wideness in the probe in one shot, and added more bloom to hide the remaining misalignment around it in others.

Again, color-correction on the new shots is way better than the previews.

After watching the preview a couple more times, it looks like the CGI wormhole from the original release is now a casualty in this new edition. The new shot of the asteroid exploding features the original wormhole and asteroid elements shown from this shot rather than the CGI wormhole.

I'm excited for this...but the exclusive premier on P+ irritates me. For whatever reason, I can't get surround sound on the P+ platform any longer. I stream through an XBox One S, and apparently surround (I have a 7.2 system) is apparently now only supported on certain streaming platforms. Very frustrating.

Due to time constraints, I will likely watch it for the first time on my iPad. But I look forward to seeing it in 4K from my Apple TV which I believe supports the surround system. Just might be a little while. We have an almost three year old and my wife doesn’t really like Star Trek (and certainly wouldn’t like TMP). (It also took us all weekend to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home this weekend… it’s hard to watch movies with someone who has about 45 minutes before she falls asleep.)

If the preview is anything to go by, it looks like they may have dropped the 'gold' titles as well.

That's probably a good idea, the gold is a bit much, though it might've blended better with the very warm, TWOK-inspired white balance of the DVD (which also seems to have been shifted back towards neutral for this release).
