TMP Appreciation

But seriously: It is THE Spock movie. Co-starring Kirk (even if he does have more screen time).
He shoulda been happy with that, it's not like there were a lot more of them coming.

TWOK & TSFS were Kirk's movies. TUC also put the major arc on Kirk, tying up his grief and misplaced anger.

Character wise, I feel like TVH and TFF were the weakest but they had moments to shine. TVH was mostly about the message and laughs, but Spock did have his journey back to embracing his human side. That's important, without question. It's just more of a spice in the mix than the driver of the plot. TVH is a plot driven movie. However, serious props to Harve Bennett for finally tying up Spock and Sarek's story. That was actually my favorite part of the film. Actually from the trial to the credits, man that movie really hits me. The rest I can take or leave.

TFF: Kirk, I guess, who goes from not having a family to realizing Spock and McCoy are his family. This didn't seem like news to me. The strongest arc, and the driver of the plot is Sybok. Nobody else has an arc. You can argue McCoy, but his begins and ends in the same scene. We never knew he was dealing with the guilt he was carrying. Spock's was a non-starter. Sybok was dealing with outdated information.

Having said that, all 6 films did try to add to and deepen the characters in various ways, at least the Big 3.

The new TMP 4K box set came from Amazon today. As much as I love the film, I seriously hope this is the last time I have to buy it*.

*Unless we get a cool holodeck version down the road.

Definitely not a fan of the packaging. Almost impossible to get the first disc out.

This is why I'm thankful for the recent Steelbook release. All three 4K cuts in one package. The bonus disc can remain in the weird packaging.

I wouldn't say that there was a lot of character development in TVH, per se, but it is the most "ensemble" of the films and really does give each character something to do and their moment to shine, which I like.

I have been suggesting that Otoy should have a go at the Memory Wall scene but using Kirk and a different crewman so it doesn't directly affect Spock's journey. After seeing their trippy effort with Kirk's time travel, I can see how they could turn it into something akin to 2001 as V'Ger reacts and tries to rationalise the presence of the two carbon units. Spock is smart enough to coast on momentum and make only visual assessments. Kirk would likely try to scan for Spock and trigger some weird sh*t.

That sounds narratively cumbersome to me, and also undercuts Spock's discovery.

Sadly this latest one is very superfluous. It mainly consists of Mike pointing out the differences between the different versions of the films that were all now very familiar with thanks to other YouTubers giving full details on them that don’t relegate to responses of “Oh, that’s the interesting” or “I didn’t notice that change.” I didn’t like how Mike was putting words into Robert Wise’s mouth as to why the certain trims were made when it was the suggestions of production staff of the Director’s Edition, such as Kirk’s second “viewer off” command.

It's a legitimately good movie and I'm glad to see it's getting some new appreciation these days.

It took the first video from RLM and then watching it myself to see the charm in it. Then bit we get from Rich in this does give us more reason to appreciate it.
Glad you grok it now. It's a slow burn for sure but I like that about it and the awkward crew interactions before everything comes together and it's just TOS again. Plus, the Enterprise herself never looked better.

Yeah. I was let down a bit too, I wanted to hear more from Rich.

I did too since he was being more insightful with his words about V’Ger being a womb. It’s really getting old that Mike is playing off being dismissive and his alcoholic tendencies that is just too real instead of exaggerated comedy.

These are the same team that had the really insightful Star Wars prequels videos that were sprinkled with abduction and serial killer "jokes", right?

Yes, that was 15 years ago. As I said before, that stuff just feels too real now instead of exaggerated comedy.
