Titanic 3D/Re-Release Thread

^

Read a story on Yahoo - the only change to the movie for the 3D release was the night sky when Kate Winslet looks up at the stars after the ship sinks, and that's thanks to an email James Cameron got from an astronomer!

Not just any astronomer! It was at the suggestion of America's favorite astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson :D

As for the movie, if I would go see it if they had a 2D release.

One review called the 3-D "redundant". It really was pointless. I'm heartened by the fact Hunger Games and a growing number of event films are coming out in 2-D only. I was expecting Dark Shadows to be 3-D but it isn't, thank god.

But the one good thing about this 3-D release of Titanic is presumably it will lead to a Blu-ray release shortly. I will assume it won't be only the 3-D version released (and with any luck that'll be a separate edition so I don't need to even buy it in a combo pack).

I'm glad to hear that (3-D notwithstanding) that Cameron at least used restraint and didn't go all George Lucas Special Edition on the rerelease. I hear he revised the SFX in one scene to make the pattern of the stars actually match what they were back in April 1912 and that was pretty much it - I usually harp about revisions to films and TV shows after the fact, but that one's minor enough to fall into the "cool" category with me.

I really don't know enough abut astronomy to say so but, yeah, there's nothing that was changed in this re-release which I think just shows how much of a superior director Cameron is over Lucas. I -sort of- wish some of the more notable deleted scenes had been added back in lack when Rose visits Jack in the third class to talk about their encounter at the stern, a scene with the officers working in the Marconi room of a nearby ship getting upset with the Titanic's frivolous messages (but that breaks the "Rose's POV/knowledge aspect, so...) and a touching/hearbreaking one of Cora and her family drowning behind a third-class gate as the swell rises.

But overall the movie was a fantastic experience again and I'm glad Cameron left it alone and repressed his urges.

Went to see the 3D version this afternoon. Love this movie.

The first half always used to bore me but I dug it this time around.

The final hour was fantastic. Exactly what the big screen was made for.

I know a lot of people have a real downer on this movie but I just don't see it myself. A thrilling story, unrivalled FX, some great James Horner music and a cast that outdoes itself.

A+

I saw it last night. I thought the 3d was well done. It felt like you were on the ship. The added depth in the scenes especially when they were looking down from the ship to the water or vis versa really added to the sense of scale. I thought this conversion blew away the Phantom Menace conversion.

I must admit I was surprised at how well the 3D worked. You always worry when the film hasnt been shot in 3D. I definitely thought that it added to the movie here though. The one worry I now have though is that it clearly can be done for older per-3D stuff so it's only a matter of time before they start working on a TOS HD-3D set!

I have seen Titanic so many times. Around 100 times and its still going on..

This film also has a nice set of Trek actor in it:

David Warner, Michael Ensign and Jenette Goldstein the most obvious, of course.
Also Greg Ellis and Tricia O'Neil.

I'd like to see it, but I won't have the time. I'm just annoyed that ever since the announcement, prices on the "Titanic" DVD skyrocketed. A used copy is somewhere around $20. A new one is anywhere from $40-$100. That's absurd! Re-release the DVD you morons!

I'll get you Cameron! I'll get youuuuuuuuuuu!

The only planned upcoming release of the film on home media is the 3D Blu-Ray.

My local newspaper had an article about this and mentioned other older films planned for re-release in 3D. I had heard of all of them except one.

It said Ghostbusters is coming back to theaters in 3D. Has anyone heard about this? I looked it up and found no mention of it. Only the mention that if a third film was ever made it would be 3D. So was that the mistake the article made?

It would make sense to convert Ghostbusters to 3D. Its doubtful a new film will ever be made at this point. So it would be the only way to see Ghostbusters on the big screen again. Also it would be the full cast with Bill Murray, which is unlikely if a sequel ever gets made.

I went and saw Titanic last night. The 3-D, as per usual, was take it or leave it; it didn't hurt the film but didn't really improve it, either.

I think Titanic's biggest weakness is also its biggest strength: It's so terribly, wonderfully earnest. It takes its premise, that this is absolutely true love set against the backdrop against the greatest maritime disaster in history up to that point, completely seriously; there's no winking at the audience in this film (at least, not about itself).

And if you can buy into that, if you can accept that creative conceit, then it is a wonderful, beautiful film -- one of the best epic romantic films in history. And if you can't accept the sheer earnestness of the film, then it is one of the most pretentious, self-important POS action flicks in history.

It's a rarity - a flick for the guys AND the gals!

Girls will dig the first half, fellas will appreciate the second half.

Cameron - Genius!

Saw it this afternoon... not gonna lie, I cried :)

It's funny, I remember seeing this at the cinema first time round with my parents and sister, I would have been about 13-14, and loving it then. Then when I saw it on TV later it didn't seem as good. Watching it on the big screen today I realise why, wow is this a movie you HAVE to see on the big screen. Also thought the depth 3D made it even more beautiful.

God it's that score that kills me. First in the scene when Rose "let's go" of Jack, and mainly in the final scene.

When it kicks in at 1:23, I was nearly bawling

Just loved it. Even with its runtime it never dragged or there wasn't a scene I didn't enjoy. I would hate people to just declare it a "chick flick," it really is a great movie.

ps. Love the part when Cal takes that little girl and pretends she's his, "I have a child here! I'm all she has left!"  what a bastard
