Titanic 3D/Re-Release Thread

^^ The thing about Titanic is that it really is a throwback to the old Hollywood epic style of film, in every sense of the world. Not just insofar as it's an amazing spectacle and historical recreation, but insofar as it's just so damn sincere and earnest about everything. It's a film that absolutely wears its heart on its sleeve and isn't afraid to be a bit cheesey when pursuing its emotions with absolute earnestness. That can either work wonderfully or be a disaster, depending on one's aesthetic sense, but I think it's lovely.

Saw it this afternoon... not gonna lie, I cried :)

It's funny, I remember seeing this at the cinema first time round with my parents and sister, I would have been about 13-14, and loving it then. Then when I saw it on TV later it didn't seem as good. Watching it on the big screen today I realise why, wow is this a movie you HAVE to see on the big screen. Also thought the depth 3D made it even more beautiful.

God it's that score that kills me. First in the scene when Rose "let's go" of Jack, and mainly in the final scene.

When it kicks in at 1:23, I was nearly bawling

Just loved it. Even with its runtime it never dragged or there wasn't a scene I didn't enjoy. I would hate people to just declare it a "chick flick," it really is a great movie.

ps. Love the part when Cal takes that little girl and pretends she's his, "I have a child here! I'm all she has left!"  what a bastard

Yeah, I think Cal was made-out to be a bit too much of a bastard and sort-of wish Cameron had a gone a slightly different direction there or at least make-us sympathize with him a bit more but when he's acting like a complete bastard and a damn-near abusive husband it's a bit hard to really buy some of his motivations. During the sinking there's a point where he has to decide between getting on a boat or chasing down Rose and he opts for the latter. It's sort of hard to "buy" why'd he'd go after Rose when we've seen little real indication he loves her or cares for her feelings and sees her as anything more than a nubile, teenage, piece of ass.

But, yeah, the score of the movie becomes damn-near perfect and epic once the sinking sequence starts.

I don't think Cal does really love her. I think in that sequence you refer to he is thinking, "How dare she do this to me? She's not going to get away with this!" It's his arrogance, self-absorption and anger that causes him to go after her.

I know Cameron takes flak for the "corny" dialogue in this film, but I think that is also a throwback to an early period of cinema just like everything else about the film is. We know he can write dialogue, look at The Abyss for example. Overall, I love this film, and it's soundtrack. It all moves me, even Dion's song, although it was WAY over-exposed.

That said, my favorite character is Victor Garber's Thomas Andrews.

Yeah, he did a great job as Andrews, really sort of felt for the guy seeing his ship going down, really the whole cast did a great job. Especially (actress whose name I can't remember right now and be arsed to look it up) who played Molly Brown.

And Zane did a good job with Cal, I just don't think Cal came out very much as a rounded character. He was just playing "stock asshole finacee/villain."

Some of the dialogue I think grates -even if it was period specific. Like when Cal first gives Rose the necklace and says something like, "I know you've been melancholy..." it just sounds off.

^ speaking of that scene, is that the one where Cal goes into Rose's room and the POV is through her mirror? Anyway, that scene looked AMAZING in 3D. The depth view through the mirror was brilliant

People all I need to know is this....is Kate Winslet nudity enough to convince a fella to see this in 3D?

Kate Winslet is as breathtakingly beautiful as ever in the re-release of Titanic, but I found myself not even noticing the 3-D effects about a half-hour into the film. So, no, I can't say that her nude scene is the subject of any particularly notable 3-D effects -- thank goodness; that would have just been crass.

Titanic 3D, available now on Blu-Ray and (not in 3D on) DVD for pre-order.

Is the new non-3D DVD release any different from the 1997 theatrical release?

There's one difference that I've seen reported:

On the advice/pestering of astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson, director James Cameron replaced the star field that Rose stares at while lying on the plank of wood at the end with one that would be accurate to her location and date. Before, a fake star field had been used; Tyson provided an accurate field.

I had heard that too. If that is the only difference I will just keep my original DVD. Although I would be interested in seeing that scene with the new stars.

Unless you're an astronomer or a real stickler to details I don't think the different star field is greatly noticeable. As far as I'm concerned it's probably the only "change" that needed to be (and could be) made if one wanted to be a real stickler to history. (I guess another one would be to change Jack's line on what lake he used to ice-fish on (a man-made lake built a couple years after Titanic sank) but that'd requiring some dubbing of Leo's line not to mention some CGI magic to make Jack's lips match. And it'd be an incredible undertaking to change the final sinking sequence to better match what likely really happened (and doing so would be impossible to do anyway.)

So I think the movie stand fine and great as it is, some of the deleted scenes I'd like to see re-edited in but that'd also change the pace and tone of the movie. (There's a chilling scene of Cora and her family drowning behind a third-class gate presumably during the Ne'er My God to Thee sequence that'd add impact that I'd like to see in the movie.

But no changes need be made, the movie is fine as it is. I've not decided if I'll get the BD or not as watching the DVD once or twice a year is good enough for me. The only buying point for me on the BD would be if the entire movie could be watched without having to switch discs.

What was great about seeing it again was all the things I'd almost forgotten about, such as the whole Bill Paxton modern day opening and closing wraparounds. I didn't realise how long it took to actually get to the Titanic 1912 part (not that I minded)

Also forgot about Jack's friend Fabrizio, with his Super Mario style accent! (it also seemed Jack forgot about him halfway through the movie too)

I'd be very tempted to go see it again actually, but with limited free time and Avengers out this week, I probably won't have time before it leaves theatres

I saw it on the big screen in '97 and quite liked it. Not the best thing I ever saw, but I enjoyed it.

I will not pay to see it again in 3D, something I feel is a gimmick and doesn't work well for my eyesight. I'd be willing to see it again in 2D, but such is life. I'll just watch again at home.

If James Cameron were to go to the trouble of changing that one line, he might as well fix the other twenty-odd anachronisms in the movie.

This is where Tyson talks about how he badgered Cameron over the sky. Tis quite funny:

The relevant part (bad science in movies) Starts around 23:50.

The part specifically about the Titanic thing starts at about 26:12.
