Titan Books

Kirby

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
It has been many years since I last read a Trek book (or any sci-fi for that matter) and while browsing at Barnes and Noble this afternoon I leafed through the only two Titan books they had: The Red King, and Sword of Damacles.
I bought The Red King, and I know it's not the first book in the series, but seeing Tuvok on the cover, it looked interesting.
So, before I start it, do I really need to read them in order, or is it ok to read them out of order?
Also, what are your impressions of the series? No spoilers please, just your over-all thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd suggest reading Taking Wing before The Red King. They're kind of a part 1 and part 2 (think pilot episode). That being said, it's possible you'd be fine without TW, but I don't think I'd enjoy the series as much if I hadn't started at the beginning. Haven't read it in awhile, so there may be memory issues here.

Titan is one of my absolute favorite Trek series and I would highly recommend it. As for the books, it would probaly be a good idea to read the first book Taking Wing, which ends in a cliffhanger that is concluded in The Red King. As for the others, the series order goes:
Taking Wing
The Red King
Orion's Hounds
Sword of Damocles
Then there is also the Riker story in the Tales from the Captain's Table, which tells the story (maybe) of Riker and Troi's honeymoon, as discussed in TW.

Also, The Red King is a sequel to the author's Lost Era entry The Sundered. Orion's Hounds is the best Titan book so far. I haven't yet finished Sword of Damocles.

Ditto with the love for the series- my absolute favorite. Orion's Hounds and Sword of Damocles are pretty much standalone. Definitely read Taking Wing before The Red King though to get a fuller appreciation for the story, but you can read the latter on its own.

Sword of Damocles is quite good. I am really enjoying the series much more than the TNGr. Titan feels new and fresh. I really like Riker as a captain and the crew is interesting. I cannot wait to see it all play out in Destiny.

Thanks all, I stopped by a Borders on the way home and picked up the first one. I'll start it tonight!

I didn't much like Taking Wing, But I did like Red King. Although Red King is sort of a continuation of the Lost Years book, The Sundered, but they do a good job of bringing readers up to date.

TW was good, RK was alright. didn't like it as much. OH is AWESOME. not read SoD yet. (goddamn UK release dates) ¬_¬

Actually The Sundered was a Lost Era book, the Lost Years was another series that fills in the gap between TOS and TMP. Don't you hate it when series have similar names like that.

Yay. Thanks.

Me too.

I really liked Taking Wing. A great way to start the series. The Red King was good, but not spectacular. I thought the premise and story for Orion's Hounds was thought-provoking and relevant, but for reasons I can't quite figure out, it took me forever to read through it all. I just picked up Sword of Damocles yesterday, so I'll start reading it sometime this week.

*Runs to Amazon throwing money in the air*

I'm also a big fan of Titan, and am looking so forward to "Sword." It's not my absolute favorite series (probably Vanguard or the NF novels are that), but it's placed very highly on the list.
