Timeline between "The Soul Key" & "Rough Beasts of Empire" (SPOILERS)

Re: Timeline between "The Soul Key" & "Rough Beasts of Empire" (SPOILE

Just now reading the thread, I got the idea that the Ascendents Arc will be told one day as an EVENT similar to how Destiny was.

But we shall see. I've given up on DS9 ever being frontburner storytelling since Marco was in charge and guiding it.

Don't hold your breath. The Ascendant story was Marco's project, and when new editors replace old, the storytelling priorities tend to shift. There could be more done with the Ascendants in the future, but it's not a given, and something as big as Destiny seems unlikely.

Sulu didn't 'go' command track; he was already there. The same thing applies to Tom Paris (Flight Control Officer, which was the original position he held on Voyager) is also a command track position, and was the evolution of the position of Helmsman.
I realise that that's been established on the show. But in a way that's the part that makes the least sense. A major part of command is the ability to manage and lead your crew, and the Pilot position is the one role that has absolutely no experience in that area.

Every other senior staff member is the head of a department - sciences, medical, engineering, security - and has at least some command experience in their management of junior staff. The pilot has no such experience. Why on Earth would you give a command position to someone who has only ever sat in a chair pushing buttons and has never had to actually, you know, command anyone?

(apologies for the thread derailment.)

It's not inconceivable that, although Prynn was assigned directly to the Defiant, she couldn't have eventually been transferred to a position aboard the station directly, nor is it inconceivable that, as other characters (Geordi, Worf, Dax, Bowers) have done before her, she could have transferred to a completely different duty track as she advanced in rank.
Prynn has shown some engineering aptitude - rebuilding a smashed transporter in Twilight for example - so yes, it's possible she could transfer. But I maintain that, once you've reached Alpha Shift Conn Officer, there's really nowhere else to go in that position without transferring.

A flight control officer is the equivalent of a CAG in Starfleet. They are in command of everything that goes on in the shuttlebays, dealing with the pilots and making sure the shuttles/runabouts are properly maintained (coordinating with operations and engineering). They are also a bridge officer, specifically the alpha shift conn officer so they do have command experience. The fact that those aspects of the job haven't been seen doesn't make them non-existent.

Well, that certainly makes sense when you put it that way. But perhaps someone would like to actually establish this in some official way, so we don't have to fanwank it?

I think something along those lines was established somewhere, maybe in one of the Titan novels? I plan to reread them again soon so if I find it, I'll let you know.

Re: Timeline between "The Soul Key" & "Rough Beasts of Empire" (SPOILE

I've just finished The Soul Key, rounding off my trek through the DS9 relaunch, and as you can imagine, have been desperately searching for any news at all on the fate of the hanging storyline... especially since both Soul Key and Olympus Descending ended on big cliffhangers.

From what I've heard, some of the plot threads are addressed via Dax on the Aventine in Rough Beasts of the Empire, but I've got a ways to go before I get to read that - I still need to catch up on the TNG novels in the intervening years (A Time To... et al), as well as finish off SCE, which I broke off at Lost Time due to it crossing over with the DS9 relaunch, which I had yet to read!

So anyway... it's sad to hear that, without Marco, these storylines may not be addressed any time soon.... and the more time that passes, the less likely a return to the relaunch era becomes.

Dax and the Aventine are not in Rough Beasts - they are in the Destiny trilogy, then A Singular Destiny, then Zero Sum Game, the latter of which also features Bashir. Sisko features in Rough Beasts, with guest appearances by Vaughn and Kira.

And again, I'd like to point you to my DS9 Season 10 project (link in sig). It's only fan-fic, granted, but I flatter myself it's pretty damn good fan-fic, and I am in the process of answering many of the questions you asked.

Left out of the timeline was Dax and crew during the Destiny Trilogy.
