Time

I think it just boils down to marketing. Most casual audiences are familiar with TOS more than any other Trek series. ENT was an attempt to recapture the "magic" of TOS and the new movie is an attempt to relaunch the franchise into the mainstream by going back to familiar characters and putting a new spin on 'em, IMO.

But we're also in the age of "prequelitis" and "rebootisis" in Hollywood too...

Wouldn't it be great if they would disregard censorship fears and really show us earth in the 24th century?
ARE there a lot of NUDISTS on earth in the 24th century? are there public orgy's I don't know about? What's there that would make the censors fearfull?

I was reading an article about the recent trend in the automotive industry to generate 'retro' inspired designs. The author of the article suggested that such efforts are often successful because they summon nostalgic feelings, but may or may not simultaneously suggest that those in charge feel they are out of 'new' ideas.

I can't help but see parallels here to Trek. Many of us have been saying for years that the Trek well has been running dry due to over-saturation and creative exhaustion, and it seems what we have here is a similar 'return to what worked best' while attempting to offer something 'new.'

Well, I'm getting ST:TMP the Novel in the mail in a few days. I'll let you know. But early projections point to: hell yeah, for over 100 years.

Well, there's always the "alternative universe" or "wizard of oz" / "its-a-wonderful-life" writing technique, where a crew-person experiences "What-Might-Have-Been" but it was "all just a dream" after an away-mission-gone-awry.

I've been tempted to do that.
