Thunderbirds Are Go - 2015 Series

In the interview, the producer talks about how it's all about the rescuses and as least violent as possible.

Guess we won't see a repeat of some of the events from the original series which involved what today would be deemed acts of terrorism (passenger aircraft being crashed in the sea, bombs on board aircraft, hijackings etc).

It's funny I never really considered Thunderbirds violent, what with The Hood, and some other characters, always surviving the most ridiculous of crashes and such. At least not when compared to the more direct violence of Captain Scarlet:

Captain Scarlet was never as widely accepted as Thunderbirds and may also have been critised for it's violence with scenes like the above.

And I don't think Thunderbirds even with gun fights etc was any more violent than a lot of kids shows.

Though I think when it comes to hijackings etc that's probably sometihng we've become a lot more sensative to over the past 15 years,

I saw the original show when I was in kindergarten. I remember that the exploding bracelets freaked me out. No permanent damage though! :techman:

I had forgotten about them! That was a tense episode! :-)

Will this be broadcast in the States? BBC? I was a huge fan of Thunderbirds 2086 anime but have a passing familiarity with the original series as well.

Most of the classic Thunderbirds can be found on Youtube- DVD sets are also pretty cheap.

I do hope this new series is available in the US sometime, but then again I am still waiting for the 'New Captain Scarlet' show for many years now...

According to the official Facebook page and the Radio Times it airs in the UK on Saturday, April 4 at 5pm:

So they are going with it over the Easter weekend.

Seems a bit strange - usually a long weekend/holiday weekend if the time when the new stuff doesn't air.

^not entierly true, DW for example in the first few seasons of the current era started Easter Saturday if memory serves.

After the premiere the following episodes will be shown at 8am Saturday mornings, which while understandable from a kids TV viewpoint, didn't really do the new Captain Scarlet any favours.

Is anyone else a little weirded out how the CG has been made to replicate the look of actual miniatures? It may go away once one sees them animated and it might just be a trick of the DoF, but the stills of the characters make them look like Ken dolls, or some stop-motion project...but at the same time oddly sterile. Even the ships look like they just shot some actual toys.

In the interview view that's linked above they show a physical model of Lady Penelope's manor so they might working with some phyisical models whichy are the converted to digital FX.

They're actually using miniature sets which have the CGI characters and vehicles (some of them anyway) placed and animated onto. So the world is mostly "real" while everything else is mostly CGI, that includes the Thunderbirds cockpits which are CGI also from what we've seen so far. Not sure if you can all see this video:

Yeah I already gathered they're using bigature sets (this is Weta, no?) What's bothering me is the quasi-uncanny valley thing going on with the characters. Clearly they've gone for a design motif that evokes the old show's puppets, miniatures and matches the physical backgrounds. Thing is there's something about them that just feels...off. Sort of too stylised to be real looking but at the same time too real to be a puppet.

It's subjective of course, but I rather think it might have been better to have been a little less slavishly faithful.
Indeed, IIRC Gerry Anderson always stove to the greatest realism and fidelity possible with the technology available. If memory serves, the oversized head thing was a limitation imposed by the jaw mechanism, which was later overcome in 'Captain Scarlet' by moving it into the chest, hence the more realistic proportions.
