"Threshold"

Rom's Sehlat

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Behold, the thread that will be the fastest to derail in recent BBS history.

So the Doctor's theory about Paris evolving past humans brings up some questions.
1. So humanoids will evolve into something non-humanoid? So much for all those "founder" type civs that said they coded the DNA in this part of the galaxy to eventually look like them. They made it sound like that was the end; the best.
2. They evolve into lizards that can't even defend themselves against weapons? When Chakotay and the gang find the lizards, they're just sitting there and don't jump up and defend or anything.

Proceed to complain now...

In other words, living the soft peaceful life of the Federation will turn you into a toad.

That of the DQ is ruled by Cerce.

Threshold makes perfect sense as long as you ignore:

The faster than infinite speed drive
Tom Paris is Jesus
Evolution can apparently happen within your life time
Evolution has a predetermined end
No one on the Voyager crew thought to use the drive to get home, then allow themselves to be delizarded
No one on the Voyager crew thought to use the drive to get home, being piloted from sickbay/the holodeck by the Doctor/specially programmed holograms while the crew is put into stasis

So yeah, the only thing that's left in the episode are the words "Written by Brannon Braga" And that makes sense :bolian:

Braga says on the DVD that his orginal plan (which he admits failed miserably) was to show that evolution may not be this gateway to betterness that people envision - that we may be de-evolving instead. Nasty slimy lizards instead of skinny, supersmart and beautiful creatures.

Janeway and Paris have a secret other family in the Delta Quadrant! Awesome.

:brickwall: evolution does not work like that :brickwall:
You've clearly never seen the "People of Wal-Mart" website or the latest news story about Jennifer Annison. I'm pretty sure it's in the back of everyones mind as they venture out into the world everyday that people seem to be getting dumber.

Yes, I truly agree with Braga in the belief that mankind is devolving.

Threshold supposes that evolution is predetermined. It doesn't work like that! There is no "Plan"! According to the Threshold logic, the Doctor should have been able to prevent Paris turning into a lizard by pressing the B button!

Ok, take a shot of Jagermiester and repeat after me: "It's just science fiction.":p:lol:

If no jagermiester, weed is an equal substitute.

Rom's Sehlat, you are aware that this is widely considered the worst Trek episode of all time, yes?

But it's so bad! It's just fiction, no science involved at all! But Brannon Braga actually thought that this was a good concept for an episode!!!

I guess it's cause I'm from the Star Wars generation of sci-fi, where it's acceptable if it's mostly fiction and no science at all.... So, I've gotten use to the idea that there is no logical science to a lightsaber but if you say it's so, I'll accept it. Same applies to folks turning into lizards.

However, thanks to bullshit like the Millennium Gate. Star Trek isn't in our universe anymore. So the science of our evolution, isn't the science of OUR evolution anymore. So the folks in Trek might as well be lizards because they aren't us anymore.

Fixed it for you. ;)

Come on, everyone knows Desert Storm was just a cover up for it. Ask Muldur & Scully. It was an X-Files/Trek cross-over.

Rom's Sehlat, you are aware that this is widely considered the worst Trek episode of all time, yes?
Yes, so I was aware it would lead to controversy, conversation, and coffee!

I know the writers had good intentions. Unfortunately, sometimes things just flop. And this one didn't just flop, it flipped and then flopped. Ah, well, the next episode sounds decent.

:guffaw::guffaw:

And now all I can think of is a fish. And now I'm hungry. What is the next episode in line? :)

Exodus
, if you get to invoke Mulder and Scully for the Eugenics Wars, how do you explain that Henry Starling (and not the rivalry between Jobs and Gates) was behind the computer revolution? ;)

Easy, Alternate Universe.
In one, it's Henry Starling.
In ours, it's Jobs & Gates.

Ever heard of Henry Starling?
See?:p

You really have to wonder how lousy Braga's grasp of basic high school biology is in order for him to have written an episode like this.

At least McNeil turned in a professional, decent performance among the surrounding garbage.

The thing is it starts off as a good ep. Most of it is fine, a Paris flyboy story, McNeil is really good in it. The first time you see it the ending it is a huge shock, like.. wtf is this?!?!? That's why I don't think it is the worst ep ever because it's like someone lost the last couple pages of the script and just dashed something off as a joke.

^ It's only good because McNeill recognised what utter horseshit he'd been handed and decided to act Paris in a way that made him seem desperate to achieve this, but even that couldn't save it.
