Thread for iPhone discussion

Since the iPhone debuts today, and it's been such an eagerly anticipated tech event, I'm going to go ahead and start a thread for the discussion of the device now. I'll leave it stickied for a week, just to save people having to hunt for it. :)

I drove by the AT&T store at 10 am today (the iPhone went on sale at 6pm), and there were 5 people camped out in front.

I saw them again around quarter of 6, and there were about 50 people.

My phone can play movies and music, has a built in GPS and is 3G (with some free streaming channels). Why should I pay 600$ for an iPhone?

so does anyone here have one? I want to know how well the onscreen keyboard works? I think that will make or break this device.

The UI looks really nice, and multi-touch seems like it is used in cool semi-unique ways. I particularly like the way you scroll with a finger swipe or zoom in and out by squeezing.

Of course I have no plans to buy this device, mostly because I don't want to enter a service contract - i have a contract with sprint, and I steadfastly believe that if you are entering into monthly phone agreement, your physical phone should come cheap. But I love messing around with cool new gadgets ;)

I *will* buy a widescreen multi-touch Video iPod without the phone and monthly stuff though, if Apple comes out with it. My 2.5 year old iPod mini is feeling long in the tooth.

I heard from someone who has used one that the onscreen keyboard is laggy. You press a key and there is lag before it is displayed.

Me personally, I'm waiting for the 2nd gen iPhone. This one is not only horribly pricey, but also missing several key features that should be standard on any phone these days, such as MMS and video camera functionality.

I have a Windows Mobile phone that supports everything the iPhone does and more already, so getting the iPhone would be a downgrade in feature set. Plus, I signed onto a 2 year contract only last December when I upgraded, so I'm already on a contract.

When my contract is up with this Windows Mobile Smart Phone I'm using in 2 years, the 2nd gen iPhone should be out, and then I will probably upgrade to that.

second generation Apple products are always much better. I remember the huge jump in battery life between iPod mini v1 and v2, glad i got v2. Also Nano v2 was scratch resistant and had colors

That's what I'm waiting for too... my guess is we'll see that by the end of the year holidays, at which point my iPod will be 2 years old so I won't feel too bad about replacing it!

I like the idea of the iPhone in theory. My problem is the built-in battery.

My contract on my Treo650 is up in October, so I was actually looking at the iPhone as a possible replacement, but the notion of having to take my phone in for servicing just to put a new battery in when the rechargeable one inevitably dies (I've got two spare batteries for my Treo, as the one that came with it isn't holding a charge the way it used to), that's just not an acceptable option for me.

If they change that or have the process be a quick one that you can just take the phone to an AT&T store and have it done in 10 minutes or so, I'd be more inclined to switch.

Oddly, that's really my only problem with the iPhone right now. Perhaps iPhone v2 will be what I'm looking for.

at www.anandtech.com they've got a fairly extensive review on the Iphone. The guy really likes it and it compares very well with his Blackberry (even out does in a number of places).

Yes the imput takes a little getting used to can be mastered very quickly.

But yes the battery life is a concern, the lack of 3G a disappointment but influenced by the battery life situation and the processor does cause some lag.

In summary is the Iphone perfect? no. Does it do anything new? not really. It's influence will be in the design and style of PDA's/mobiles in the future.

10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy an iPhone

Funny article, read to the very end to see why :)

I'm a bit troubled by that article and then the revelation at the end. If the guy truely wants one, then how could he come up with such detailed "cons" about the device?

It'd be like, "There's this new gizmo out, it has many bugs, and many problems, but I want one...bad!!!"

I think I could sell this guy some shit if I just marketed it right.

My phone can make phone calls, why should I pay 600$ for an iPhone?

Overrated Apple-branded crap. Of course, the brainless herds of dumb consumers keep filling Job's pockets claiming he's the Messiah.

I hope every one of those iPhones break in a few months.

Such bitterness. I can't understand this feeling that people who don't share your value judgments must be punished.

Also, if there were brainless herds of dumb consumers filling Job's pockets, the Mac game market wouldn't be on life-support.

I'm the field of Graphic Design - I of all know people what it's like to be face-to-face with these Apple addicts day in, day out.

They need to be exterminated.........and all those with iTunes must be destroyed as well.

This is not a fad...it is a plague.

Guys, let's try and put the Mac/PC war aside and actually, y'know, discuss the technology here, please?

I know this can venture dangerously close to the equivalent of a religious discussion, but what do you say we give it the proverbial college try, 'kay? :vulcan:

Thank you.

It's not a Mac/PC war here....I simply HATE all things Apple. MacOSX is a capable OS and the products, on their own, usually aren't half bad.

But Jobs, Apple and his cult all have this holier-than-thou mentality that drives me friggin' crazy. Freakin' nerdos. I mean, I'm a self-admitted nerd....but these people just don't know when to stop.

And then of course, when the ignorant, fad-happy mainstream public gets involved things only get better.

I still find it so hilarious that the iPod would have never gotten where it was if didn't work in Windows support a few years ago (because the vast majority of iPod owners use PCs)...yet Apple fanatics would actually have you believe non-Apple users are USELESS and STUPID. It's a "Hate You / Need You" relationship.

iPhone stress testing (check out the video!) I haven't read the full review yet, just skimmed it, but it's pretty long and indepth and Ars generally writes good reviews. They gave it an 8/10.

That is, of course, if we're done wantonly hating on people who like Apple products ;)
