thoughts on the Kindle

I got a Kindle for Mothers Day and I am addicted to it. I love being able to just order the next book in a series, like when I devoured the Destiny series. I just don't have time to go to bookstores anymore, and anyway, the nearest ones are downtown or literally a 30 minute drive away. And I don't live in the boonies, either. I find it easy to hold, but browsing can be a challenge. I took it on vacation for a week, and didn't have to worry about finishing a book and being stuck with nothing to read. I've already got 21 books on there (most of them Trek books) which I'd never have room to keep in my house. I can't compare it to any other e-reader, but I do love it.

But it's more expensive and is mure bulkier.. Can't even put in pocket.

I bought a case for it, that functions as a "travel purse," when I take it out (meaning I just take my wallet out of my purse and pop it into the case and voila, instant purse.)

I wouldn't WANT to put something like that in a pocket.

I have a Kindle 1 (that I am ready to sell) and I just ordered my Kindle 2 which is supposed to be here tomorrow. I like the Kindle. It has been so much more convenient and easier for me to read Trek books on and I don't have to run to 5 stores to find the book I want. Very nice.

I'm having to restrain myself from also buying a Kindle DX, just to play with :)

Yeah, the big screen and native PDF capability is attractive. But too expensive.

Is it wrong for me to post up my Kindle 1 in this forum for sale to another Trek BBS member?

I want to sell it, but I would rather off load it to someone who reads Trek. ;-)

Just a side note. I received my Kindle 2 today and it is great. They made advances in design over the previous model.

I use a PMA400 for e-book reading.

This is a Linux computer with an ARM processor. It is about as thick as a 300 page paperback not as tall or a wide so it easily slips into a pocket. The Kindle is too big. I had to install the program JustReader. My only complaint is that it doesn't automatically scroll. A variable speed scroll would be perfect.

I am currently checking out books in Project Gutenberg But I can convert PDFs into text files on my desktop and download them via USB cable.

I have just read 4 Star Trek books. Rogue and Rogue Saucer which are TNG. Abyss that is DS9 and Shadow which is Voyager. I started Terok Nor but it is too slow, I haven't gotten passed 60 pages.

I think netbooks and the coming smartbooks should kill off the Kindle. Smartbooks will have ARM processors just like my PMA400.

The screen is too bright. Backlit screens are much less comfortable than eInk screens. If you don't believe me, try one. It's almost exactly like reading a printed page.

Sony has two new models coming this month the 300 a 5" version of their Popular 505 model, and a 600 a slightly revised 700 model, I'm interested in the 300 because it's slightly smaller than the 505 and more apt to slip into a pocket. I've read on my Ipod Touch also its not bad, but can't compare to an E ink device, if you were comfortable reading on a PDA, then the Ipod Touch/Phone is a good comparision. The 300 Sony will sell for $199 when released.

I do agree that the ebook versions should be about $2.00 less than there paper counterparts

^ psikeyhackr, please do not hotlink images from sites you do not own.

That wasn't a custom image. It is old Archos PR. That is an obsolete unit and Archos doesn't have a picture on their site anymore. I bought it off ebay. But OK. Sorry!
