Thoughts on the end of Workforce

Let's see... having to work for a living vs exploring the galaxy in a state of the art starship after nearly 7 years of trying to get back home while also managing to cut a 70 odd year trip into (what seemed at the time) a 23 years long journey (with a potential to cut it even further).

I think I would choose exploration on a starship.
These people are explorers by definition and Starfleet officers... 'mundane life' really doesn't suit most of them - or at least, not the mundane life which that planet had to offer.
The planet from the 37's at least managed to recreate aspects of what Humanity did in the AQ... so that would likely have been more tempting.

Can't seem to edit my post...I wanted to add that even if it was dull, it was SAFE. After all they went through those seven years I could understand some people wanting that.

I know I just said that I wouldn't want to spend my life on a planet whose inhabitants kidnapped my crew and attacked my ship*, but I can relate to this, because of one simple reason:

People have the RIGHT to feel safe if they want to.

Not everyone is cut out to be an adventurer. Some people just don't want to push the envelope or live on the edge or any of that crap. There really are those for whom safety and security is their life goal. And shouldn't they have that option if they want it?

* I admit I'd also like to see Starfleet sending a task force to worlds like this. "Hi...remember us? You declared WAR on us, tried to kidnap one of our ship's crews? Shall we see how long it takes to reduce your planet to a warm object the size of a child's bowling ball?"

I just keep thinking about what if someone was falling in love down there and in their head they were thinking...well do I continue on this dangerous mission to the AQ and possibly die along the way, or do I stay here with this person and make a new life maybe start a family...I could see how it would be tempting.

If all that awaited you at home was trouble, such as an inevitable court martial, I could see that.

Sounds like a fanfic.
There are probably lots of people on Voyager, former Maquis most likely, that don't have much to go back to the AQ for. In Eye of the Needle B'Elanna mentions "there's no one back home who's going to care one way or the other whether I'm alive" so I'm sure there are others who feel that way too.

If nothing (work/friends) had held Jaffen on this planet alien, I wonder if Janeway would have suggested him staying on Voyager and spend the rest of the journey together in DQ, reversing her decision not to be invest with a man...
Of course, I know the answer* but, it would have been interesting to hear Janeway asking the question! ;)

* In fact , it seems that neither one (Janeway) nor the other (Jaffen), wished give up what they had.

The whole Tom and B'Elanna thing confused me. They separated them... with all that med tech they couldn't the figure out that Tom was her baby's father? And on a planet desperate for workers they fire a highly capable person like Tom (who is always doing things that are not his job) and allow him to work as a bartender?

I know, the writer's wanted to add a melodramatic touch to show that they were meant to be together no matter what.

It bothered me so much I wrote a fic about it. Got some good reviews.

I really liked their scened at the bar, how they were still drawn together. When Neelix "kidnaps" her I loved how worried he was.

I can't see people really wanting to stay at the end, considering it was a type of assimilation, albeit one more benign in some aspects than that of the Borg.

I thought it was a horrible place, regardless of the abduction. I can't see anyone willing to stay there unless they come from someplace really dreadful.

It's only slightly better than living inside a rock like Neelix and his talaxian friends.

It seems that it's seven herself that fired Tom's ass. She probably didn't appreciate his humor.

It was Seven who fired him... but they could have found another place for him somewhere else. It looked like a huge plant. It just didn't make sense to me.

Yes they could have but then it would have made it harder for B'Lanna and Tom to meet.
