Thoughts on "Greater Than The Sum" (Beware Spoilers)

Well I've just finished Greater than the Sum and I must thank Christopher for an excellent read. I couldn't put it down, reading the entire thing in just under 24 hours (by contrast the last three books I read, the Terok Nor Trilogy and Kobiashi Maru took me just over five months!)

I especially liked T'Ryssa, who managed to be instantly likeable and annoying at the same time (unlike T'Lana, who was just instantly annoying when she first appeared) and Choudhury, who managed to present security in a whole new light (the scene between her and Worf where you see the deep effect that the Dominion War had on her was brilliant).

I liked T'Ryssa too. It's actually nice to see a starfleet character who's a bit of a flake. Too bad she doesn't stay around....

Yes she does. She wasn't in Destiny much since Bennett created her after Mack had already written much of it, but she plays a fairly large role in Losing The Peace, out in July.

She does?

I apologize; I thought I remembered you saying so at some point.

I wouldn't ever post something like that unless I remembered reading you or someone who'd read it saying so definitively. But I have a pretty strong memory of a discussion about the annoyingly high turnover in TNG-R main characters wherein you said something about how the crew would be staying the same through Destiny and into LTP, and that T'Ryssa in particular would be fairly prominent. Am I mistaken in that memory?

T'Ryssa was nice new addition to the crew.

Overall I liked the book. A good TNG story. Professor Annika Hansen made me raise my eyebrow, though.

Actually, that was another thing I liked. I always though that as Seven became more and more human (and left the Borg further and further behind) that she would start to use her human name.

I know I'd mentioned T'Ryssa would be be in LtP, but I don't recall saying with any specificity how large or small a role she played. But I'm old and my mind isn't what it once was.

I guess I'd say it's "fairly large" as compared to her role in the Destiny trilogy, but not so prominent as compared to GTTS. (How's that for an answer that doesn't actually answer anything?)

Well, both Greater Than the Sum and Destiny seem to be implying that the Federation government and society at large continue to refer to Seven by her legal, Federation name, but that she still thinks of herself by her Borg identity, Seven of Nine.

Well, okay, she may be going by her Human name now that the Borg are finally gone...

Fair enough; thanks for the clarification. (Such as it was... ;))
