I'm fairly sure that Showgirls was a big practical joke by Verhoeven. he may like to roll around in the shit with his movies, but he's certainly no fool.

As well as a big "up yours" by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who was reportedly paid three million dollars to write this colossal turd. Showgirls is what Hollywood types call a "high concept" picture -- the high concept being All About Eve with tits.
