Thought exercise: One TOS episode with an unlimited budget?

Good evening.

If you could take a single episode of Star Trek: The Original Series and reshoot it with an unlimited budget (for actors, special effects, scoring, et cetera), which would it be and why?

Wow, this is a hard one. I honestly can’t think of an episode where I’d say, “Oooo… this would have been even better if they had spent more money.”

I agree. Many of them were written with budgetary cast restrictions in mind and most episodes that used stock music used it relatively well.

The only ones that immediately come to mind are The Doomsday Machine and The Ultimate Computer, mainly for special effects reasons. The latter would be nice with a longer battle between the Enterprise and the task force (the remastered version kind of copped out here, unlike The Doomsday Machine).

Better sets, better writers, better directors, actors we'd never dream possible, expanding a single episode to two (or more?)...the sky's the limit.

I know you said TOS, but I would actually love to see both “Yesteryear” and “Beyond the Farthest Star” from The Animated Series filmed as live action episodes. The unlimited budget would make it possible to show Vulcan in all its glory and explore the vast alien ship from “Beyond” in a way animation never could.

There's some TOS episodes where I wish they would have had more time, money and resources to save them from becoming the subpar offerings they became. Episodes like “The Alternative Factor”, “Catspaw” or “The Gamesters of Triskelion” come to mind.

oh, that’s a great idea.

(And replace the actor who played young Spock. His vocal read was soooooo flat it always drives me nuts )

Maybe 'Arena', Better opening battle, see the Gorn ship, a better take on the lizard suit.

These are all great choices. Especially the TAS suggestions.

I'll add "Balance of Terror" for FX and better Romulan Warbird set.

I'll also toss in "Errand of Mercy" for a makeup budget that gives us true Klingons right off the bat.

Either “The Doomsday Machine” (for special effects) or “Space Seed” (for flashbacks to Khan’s time on Earth during the Eugenics Wars and his escape from Earth). But I don’t feel like TOS really needs it. Its designed to be produced on a low budget to begin with.

The far more compelling ones are with TAS – “Bem”, “The Magicks of Megas-Tu”, “Beyond the Farthest Star” (that Insectoid starship), “Yesteryear”, “How Sharper Than a Serpent’s Tooth”, etc.

I'm stealing my answer from another thread about episodes as films or something, but probably just "Tomorrow is Yesterday." I think it would be fun doing that set now or even back then but with today's effects, especially seeing the plane tracking the Enterprise and breaking up in the tractor beam. I'd totally rip off the U-2 crash scene from "Bridge of Spies." Then you have the base infiltration and the interrogation scene, which you make more frenetic and intense. And then a big time warp at the end.
On the other hand I'd remake "By Any Other Name" on a zero budget but with the entire Frat Pack and Regina Hall and just amp up the Kelvans going nuts at the end.

I'll throw another one out there - Journey to Babel. The episode feels like it needs another 10-15 minutes in the middle (particularly with respect to the assassin who's suddenly trying to kill Captain Kirk), the Tellarite makeup could be much better, and it'd be neat to see the corridors more packed with delegates and crew. The Orion ship not being a bunch of lights would also help. I'd also like to see some of the Babel conference itself, perhaps with Sarek's recovery being more in doubt and him coming in at the last minute to save Babel's admission to the Federation.

I think it's interesting that some people are naming some of the fan favorites like “Space Seed”, “The Doomsday Machine” or “Journey to Babel”, because I don't feel there's so much room to improve on these classics. Nothing wrong with that, of course, just an observation. I think it's much more interesting to envision how a lackluster episode could have been turned into a classic had it just received that much more attention and resources.

I'll have to think on specific episodes. Generally speaking, I'd like to see Hepburn as a Vulcan (probably a supporting character in "Amok Time", then?) and McQueen as a slightly rebellious Federation officer that initially opposes Kirk before coming around to accept his command style.
