I really like the look. Nice mix of influences from Kirby's designs (the patterns on Odin's armour, especially), toned down a bit for the screen (the colour palette, especially). I like the very sleek, futuristic look; I imagine a lot of people were expecting them to look like Viking peasants, but that's not the comic Asgardians, and never has been.
Odin's eyepatch may be a bit too shiny.

Can't say I'm to fired up about the 3-D idea. I'm sure that comes from not putting IM:2 in 3-D. They no doubt could've pulled several 10K's more in those first few weekends with it.
Unless I get the sense that the movies worth 3-D, as in lots and lots of visuals coming at me, I'm going to 2-D. Not all movies are enhanced just by being in 3-D I've found.

James Cameron has already stated his intention to convert Titanic into 3D (well, "2.8 D" as he calls it), so he evidently believes that it's possible to do a good conversion job if you take the time (maybe Marvel should hire him as a consultant).

I much prefer the newer pic (Thor being banished from Asgard?) to the one of Thor, Odin and Loki. The outfits don't really appeal to me, but I suppose Norse Gods will be dressed a bit more fancy than say the vikings in The 13th Warrior.

I don't know for sure, so I could be wrong, but until I read or saw some behind the scenes stuff, I wouldn't bet that all of that is there. It could be an extended set via green screen with extended guards via CGI with enhanced set dressing via Chroma-key. Ha!
The birds, whether real or not, is a nice touch, though.
