The whole point of a shared universe is that the characters all co-exist and intersect with one another instead of pretending that no one else exists except their own little corner of the Verse.

That's why the movie also had Bruce Banner aka the Hulk, a SHIELD Quinjet, the Tesseract, Thanos' ship and Natasha Romanoff's image, as well. Those didn't bother me. However, I didn't need Doctor Strange or constant reminders of Tony Stark.

I liked that Strange was in the movie mainly because he is new and I want to know more about him. Like Downy JR. I think I’m ready for the end of Iron Man. He didn’t need to be mentioned.

Movie was fun and all but... is this really what you want all comic book movies to be?? 80s fantasy movies with modern effects? I am really terrified that we've seen the end of the serious comic book hero. Perhaps we can count on Fox to carry that torch...

Who said that they wanted all comic book movies to be like this? I don’t think anyone is suggesting that there should be a “one size fits all” approach to comic book films. I loved this film but wouldn’t want to see a Batman movie in this vein.

Dr Strange was there for only a few minutes and because out of ALL the MCU characters it made the most sense he'd be the one dealing with Magical related stuff after Thor.

As for Stark, he got one or two mentions and it was relating to Bruce getting Earth clothes.

Seriously, that's it?

But don't you understand? This is the Secret Tony Stark Agenda to infiltrate and ruin every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! No movie is safe!

That's what we've been getting from Marvel. The last 3 are pure comedies, so it's now a near certainty that the MCU is now a comedy universe. Which would be ok, since they'd be countered by DC's more serious approach. Oh wait, WB could not stick to their guns and are making a pure comedy JLA!

GOTG2 was always going to be a comedy. Spider-man HC has funny elements but so have all Spider-man films. I don’t expect Black Panther, Captain Marvel or Avengers 3 to be as comedic as Ragnarok but obviously Ant-Man and the Wasp will probably be.

Spidey's always been humorous, GOTG2 was always going to be the way it was and Thor Ragnarok was them experimenting to see if they could try something new with Thor that worked.

And now DC is realizing that they shouldn't be ashamed of themselves anymore.

Have you read a DC comic in the 21st century? It's a lot more like Snyder's movies than... whatever we are seeing in that trailer.

Yeah, I have. And no, they aren't.

My own thoughts on the film:

I liked the anti-colonialism themes in the story. Hela represented the old ways of conquest that Asgard once embraced, Thor started off the same way but his character development means he'd changed since then. The people of Asgard would rather die than go back to those older ways, and this is symbolized by Thor deliberately destroying Asgard to eliminate Hela.

He and the people will make a new home elsewhere, one that doesn't have to be built on conquest and death to make something.

No I don't want all comic book movies to be like this. I don't mind if "Guardians of Galaxy" was made in this style. In fact, I would not have minded if the first Thor film had also been made in this style. But considering the movie's narrative about Ragnarok and Thor's new role as Asgard's king, I wish Marvel had taken a slightly more serious approach to this story.

Strange. A critic had complained that the movie failed to fully explored the consequences of Asgard's colonial past. After reading your comment, I don't know whether to agree or not. I would have to see the movie again.

Spidey's always been humorous

Not always. A good number of the past Spider-man comic book titles and movies have been pretty serious.

It was known Doctor Strange would be in this movie for over a year, given the ending to his own movie. You're blatantly just moaning for the sake of it

And you know this . . . how? I don't recall us being acquaintances. I knew that Doctor Strange would be in the movie. I just didn't care for it and I'm entitled to my opinion, whether you like it or not.

Saw it last night. What a hoot.

Fun, exciting, interesting.

Great characters and set piece battles.

Solid A.

Grade: B+

I could see myself downgrading to just a solid 'B' upon a rewatch as I've had a few days to let the film sink in. It's by far the best overall Thor film but even saying that the other two are overly dumped upon. However, in a 17 film series(to date) something has to be at the bottom but I'd still take those over 3/4 of other Hollywood fare out there any given year.

Positives:
Hulk:
I got the Hulk in a film I've been wanting for over a decade now.
Banner: I enjoyed his moments in the film sans one, which is a negative.
Thor: another solid turn by Hemsworth + we got more helmet.
Loki: equally well done once again by Hiddleston.
Odin: I did not feel like Hopkins was phoning it in. I particularly enjoyed the family moment at his death.
Hela: Cate Blanchett was terrific!
Skurge: I enjoyed how he wasn't just an evil stooge for the sake of being so. He was an opportunist who wanted to stay alive and ultimately did the right thing.
Valkyrie: Ok, so she wasn't Brunhild(sp), the classic blonde we see in the comics but I think we saw a shot of her in the Death of the Valkyrie's montage flashback. So, that said we have a new different member of that order who was lots of fun and can be explored.
Heimdell: Loved his role as the "last line of preservation", the 'Noah' of the story in some ways.
Grandmaster: Jeff Goldblum in an over the top role, yeah, perfect.

Negatives:
Warriors Three: to be these great Asgardian warriors 2of3 died with no fight at all. Killed in an ambush fashion really. Only Hogun was shown putting up something of a resistance that resembled a fight. Now I'm glad Sif wasn't there. We can fan fiction her as exiled or off world.
Korg: not the translation of the character I recall from Planet Hulk. I may just be misremembering. This was not the battle hardened gladiator I remember.
Miek: being relegated to a sight gag was just sad.
Sutur: while I appreciate that he and Thor had something of a fight in the beginning he's too dominant a force to just be essentially a plot device. Underused/Misused is my gripe

Indifferent:
Dr. Strange:
I can see how using him as a fast bridging element to get to Odin was necessary. However the scenes went about 3 min too long with him. Get to the point faster.
Stan Lee: the gratuitous cameo was cute, I'll give them that.

The Sets were fantastic
The Action top notch
Surprising me with Thor losing his eye! I did not see that coming.
I also enjoyed the Matt Damon/Sam Neil hidden cameos.

This is officially the first time I feel Marvel Studios injected too much humor into a film. I'm totally fine with my action films having comedic elements. All 16 prior Marvel Studio films have struck a good balance to varying degrees from IM into Winter Soldier to the Guardians films. All the films were able to have their dramatic beats and comedy moments(cake & hit it too so to speak) but this is the first one where the comedy was hammed up so much it took away from what could've been some building drama and/or intrigue.
Exhibit A: Thor spinning in the chains. Talking to the corpse, yes. The "wait a sec, I'm coming back around" done twice at that--no.
Exhibit B: The rebounding ball in Hulk's apartment knocking Thor down in what should be an escape moment leading to a chase for the Quinjet.
Exhibit C: Banner dropping from the Quinjet to do battle on the Rainbow Bridge....splat. He's not the Coyote in a Looney Tunes sketch. Come on now!
Exhibit D: Korg talking over what should be a sad and dramatic moment of Asgards demise.

Overall worth seeing on the big screen. I just hope Black Panther and Infinity War don't follow in this manner with the over comedy. I want to be able to chalk this over humor issue up to the Director being allowed to have influence on the film.
