THOR 2 will be released in Summer 2013

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios, which is in production on the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers, is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I've learned, Kenneth Branagh won't be returning as helmer. Branagh, who directed the first film and watched it gross $437 million worldwide with a few territories still playing out, will likely be involved in some producing capacity. His exit was "mutual and amicable," I'm told. That means a big job is out there that a lot of directors and their agents will be chasing over the upcoming holiday.

This is great news. I wonder which new director they will pick for the sequel?

That's great news, though it's a shame Branagh won't be back. After the false start of Frankenstein, he finally showed that he can handle a big-budget commercial movie. But the important thing is, we get a sequel.

Maybe, maybe not. Look at IM2. It felt too much like a less polished remake of the first film. And, while Branagh did a respectable job with the action in Thor, I could see another director improving on the action for the sequel by a wide margin. If Marvel is thinking big for an epic second film (which ideally they would be), Branagh might shy away from another round of iteration on loads of CGI effects, and he might not be the best choice in any event. He did his job by making the whole thing palatable in the first place.

So, this could work out for the best, depending on who ends up coming on board. Anyway, good news on the sequel.

^ Yeah, I take your point about IM2 but I tend to view its faults as being down to Marvel trying too hard to set up The Avengers as well as a duff script. Branagh had a good script and managed to side-step that whole Avengers-prequel trap.

Clearly if his replacement is top-notch - think Shane Black for IM3 - then no problem. But with many superhero movies, the rot has set in when the original director has been replaced - Donner on Superman, Burton on Batman, Singer on X-Men. Just keep Shumacher and Ratner off the Marvel studios lot!

Yeah, who knows. Also, as I recall, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins basically only signed on because of Branagh's involvement, so I could see that being an issue. *shrug* Time will tell.

Great news!!! In this depressed box office climate and with a lesser known hero like THOR it's nearly $180m domestic total is indeed impressive.

Kinda of torn on Branagh not coming back.

It cements THOR as bankable for sure.

It's a shame Branagh won't be back, but aside from Louis Leterrier, Marvel's done a good job of hiring quality directors for their movies. I'm sure they'll find someone appropriate for Thor 2.

Since Iron Man 3 is already slated for May 3, 2013, I'm guessing they'll put Thor 2 sometime in July.

I wonder if Branagh was told what the aftermath of The Avengers will be and said, "Oh, fuck that, I'm not going to try and follow that up."

Granted, it's more likely that Thor was an experiment for him, to see if he could really tackle an effects-laden blockbuster, and he succeeded, so now he's moving on to other endeavors. (That, or Marvel lowballed him like they did Favreau and Norton.) In any event, it's a major bummer that he won't be back. He really brought a great eye to Asgard.

As for a new director ... Sam Raimi would be interesting, but I doubt he and Marvel would get along. I'd give real money to see Danny Boyle do it.

Frankly I don't see what the big deal was about Branagh's direction. Yeah he made a fairly fun movie, and he should probably be commended for making the character work on screen at ALL... but the wildly different tones of the Asgard and Earth scenes were jarring and distracting as hell I thought.

I just don't think the story flowed nearly as well as it could have.

IIRC, Natalie Portman is already signed for a sequel. Don't know about Hopkins.

^ I believe that, yes, she is signed for multiple Thor movies, but I don't know how etched in stone that is. No idea for Hopkins.

A look at Anthony Hopkins' filmography should dispel the idea that he's averse to doing paycheck roles in blockbusters even if there isn't a name director attached (though I'm sure Marvel will have plenty of people bidding for the job).

People should know this after Hopkins did Red Dragon.:rommie:

What about Matthew Vaughn? He was attached to Thor at one point. So we know he likes the character. However, I'd much rather he direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class (or even Kick-Ass). I'm not sure if he'd want to direct a third consecutive comic-book movie.
