Third Trailer

I really hope that the third (and likely final) trailer is a much more classic Star Trek trailer. They should look at the trailers for TWOK, TUC, GEN and FC for examples of what to do.

I hope not. They gave away way too much of the plot. I want to have an ounce of surprise here.

Yeah, and I think they're hoping Watchmen pulls in non-genre people like 300 did and they're hoping Star Trek will.

You know, there is an aspect of this which is about geekdom and overlapping subsets of geekdom.

Basically, it's not just that Trek fans are perceived by marketers as devoted fans of a genre - but that we're a diminishing, older group of fans who are sort of adrift in the larger currents of contemporary pop culture.

Watchmen itself is aimed at a younger (despite the age of the graphic novel), bigger and perceived-as-hipper cohort of genre fans. Exactly the kind of people who they think ought to be a potential audience for Trek but who dismiss it as timeworn, corny and tiresome.

True enough. Then again, I'm 25 and I'm a die hard Trekkie. I don't think fandom is as aging as you think given the median age of posters around here.

But you're right. Watchmen is an inherently sexier property than Trek is. Bucking the trend. Outlaws. All that stuff.

I, for one, hope that Star Trek brings a little of that to Trek. It shouldn't be about that, but it needs a little more edge than it's had in the past.

I know what you mean DeafPoet, but to the marketers you and I are getting old. Some of us are in the prime of our disposable income, but a lot of us are getting wives, kids, and mortgages instead. We're among those that were introduced to Trek during NextGen's heyday. After us there really isn't a big group of kids that had to be home at a certain time for new Trek.

"Here" is a self-selected set of people who mostly are comfortable socializing online - this kind of Internet usage itself skews young, so of course younger fans are overrepresented relative to their numbers in the population at large. Really, TV sponsors and the studio folk themselves are pretty sure that Trek's core audience is not the people they're selling iPhones to.

What's actually surprising is how many of us geezers there are hanging out here.

I want an iPhone...but I'm almost positive I'm gonna feel really old after seeing this movie!

anyway... He's a good tag line for the next trailer...

"...Sit Down, Strap In, And Hang On..., This Ain't Yer Grandfather's Trek Anymore..."

or...

"...In This Star Trek Universe, Time Has No Meaning..."

I would've guessed you were younger. It's pretty impossible to tell really.

I just hope they show us something cool and new without giving away too much plot, maybe the bar scene or Spock (Either one)doing something cool

I'd like to see more dialogue from our principal characters in the next trailer. The spot was superior to the earlier trailer off the back of that exchange between Kirk and McCoy alone.

Is this one going to be a bit longer then the previous ones? It would be nice to have a bit more dialogue and to see the cast in action a little.

I'm 26, been a Trekkie since I was 11, and am eagerly awaiting the new movie. Maybe I'm atypical for my generation, but I'm hoping other youngsters will be attracted into theatres for this one.

Usually the last trailer for a movie is longer and sort of outlines the story, right? I wonder if they'll go that route, or just keep with the tease approach. If not, my guess is that they'll expand on the Kirk elements of the Superbowl spot, rather than spending significant time on any element of time travel, multiSpocks, etc.

Playing devil's advoacte here. I thought it was TPTB's goal to try to reach out to as wide a mainstream audience as possible. Isn't putting this trailer before an R rated movie defeating that purpouse? Or does TPTB think that no one under 17 won't even bother with Trek? And if that's the case, why make toys and Barbie dolls that tie in to the movie?

Well, it will premier with Watchmen, sure, but I've no doubt it'll pop up attached to at least half a dozen other movies between then and May.
