Things to see and do in the American South?

My father wants me to go on a road trip with him to visit various Civil War battle sites in the South. Carlsbad Caverns, Graceland, Nashville, & New Orleans are also on the itinerary. I'm wondering what other sites in the South along the way or in these areas you would recommend?

A couple bits I was thinking of:

Visiting the motel room in Memphis where Martin Luther King Jr. spent his last night.

Okracoke Inlet, where Blackbeard made his final stand.

- The southern end of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain, Georgia
- Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center in Florida
- The US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama
- The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas
- Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve and swimming hole west of Austin, Texas

Charleston, S.C., just over the border from Savannah, Ga.

Gettysburg is in south-central Pennsylvania if you're willing.
There was a battle at Manassas in Virginia.

Cape Hatteras and Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
St. Augustine, Florida
Savannah, Georgia, one of the few cities to escape Sherman's wrath.
Jamestown and Yorktown, Virginia
Washington, D.C.
Mt. Vernon, Virginia
Lincoln's and Jefferson Davis' birthplaces in Kentucky
Walt Disney World!

The Georgia Guidestones (no, not really)
Rock City near Chattanooga
The Bourbon Cowboy in New Orleans has a mechanical bull, that's kinda fun

*Zombie Meade bursts out of his grave in Philadelphia*

The OP meant Southern US, not Southern Pennsylvania

:p

South of Long Island Sound, there be dragons. Anyway, Savannah would be a city I'd like to see. Especially in a good season for the foliage. I'd particularly like to visit the Wormsloe Plantation. http://www.pulsarecard.com/r_nature...867_springtime_in_savannah_georgia_42628.html

^ I'm sure it does, but I've never been down south (although I will be this July - you can probably guess the reason).

Then again, the first time I ate grits was in KC, so what do I know.
