Things that really took you by surprise

Actually there was just one thing that really took me by surprise: Mama Spock's death.

(Or should I put that in spoiler tags?)

There were quite a few things actually, but the Spock/Uhura relationship actually made me go "WHOA" outloud in the theater.

Well we knew going in that this was going to be a divergence from the prime universe timeline, so none of those 'timeline' continuity changes really surprised me.

And since this was a fresh creative team, looking to be something other than a cover band for TOS, none of the 'dramatic' changes (Spock/Uhura) really surprised me. I guess I was expecting some surprises along those lines.

As pathetic as it sounds, my 'whoa' moment came when we saw the shuttlebay.

I'm like "Wait. What? Just how big is this thing?"

I was surprised at how good the first 3 minutes were, and how it then went totally downhill from there. The Spock and Uhura stuff surprised me, as well as Kirk going from Cadet to Captain in no time.

The fleet going to warp, as in, the new warp effect. In a THX digital display 3000 seat cinema, it really threw me back in my seat.

1. That my kid, who's not a Trek fan, wanted to see it to begin with and 2, really liked it and 3, is anxiously anticipating the DVD release.

Orci, Kurtzman and JJ; way to go!

Gah! Thanks a lot!

Oh, who am I kidding? I just can't stay mad at you with that Zita Johann avatar.

-The extent of the Spock/Uhura relationship.
-How much I disliked the guy who played Sarek.
-How little screen name Winona Ryder got.
-How much screen time Nimoy did get.
-The thing with the unicorns and Denis Leary punching the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in the head while riding The Silver Surfer's surfboard.
-How supremely badass Robau turned out to be.

Things that took you by surprise

Women being reduced to their original unimportant roles.

Communication station? What communication station? Chekov can do everything comms wise at his console and he's not even a coms officer.

Know the Romulan language? All three dialects? Good, that will be a useful trait to have if we didn't have universal translators that conveniently translates what Nero and his crew are saying. But don't worry, you can still say "We're being hailed' while not at your station, because Nero and his crew can put themselves on-screen without your help.

What's that? You're the top student of your class? You have expertise that's unmatched? Perfect! Take the receptionist station next to the BOILERS where the only way you can be found is if someone uses the computer to locate you.

Hmm? Kirk has been jettisoned and there is no first officer? I'm sure Spock would also find it logical that someone with great communication skills and a strong sense of perseverance would make a fantastic first officer, but I guess Spock forgot because even when he knew your skills, he still put you in the boiler room.

Uhura, I'm sorry you were put into a position where your only contribution was to help get Kirk his unjust promotion, but let's be honest. Nobody is worried about you being used solely to hanging around in the background stating the obvious and being Spock's love thing. To the writers, you're just a girl who's pretty, like Megan Fox in Transformers. The writers think they can make you seem more important by giving you all these skills, but in the end they don't contribute anything for the story on how it's resolved. This is a story about enterprising young men, not women.

And the best part? Everyone is cool with that.
