Things that frustrate us all

People on cell phones IN MY STORE WHEN I'M TRYING TO HELP THEM :scream:  :barf: :brickwall:

Got to agree with this one, it's just plain rude to be on your phone when you are being served. You wouldn't like it if the assistant was on the phone.

I was store clerk. I sympathize that it can be frustrating and difficult to deal with when people are on their phone while you're trying to help them, and it would be nice if people were friendlier and paying closer attention to those around them. But that's quite simply not remotely a comparable situation.

It's the cashier's job to serve the customer. The customer is under no obligation to the cashier except to pay for their goods or services. If they're making work calls or talking to friends and family or arranging for babysitters that's their business because unlike the cashier or clerk it's on their free time.

^ I can't serve the customer if I can't talk to them. And if they're jabbering away on their damn phones, I can't talk to them.

And you know what? Stores are not the place for customers to be conducting 'free time'. I am well aware that it's my job to help them, and I'm fully prepared to do so. But the customer has a "job" as well - to conduct whatever transaction they came in there for, and to do it in a reasonably timely manner. It's not just about being polite to the store staff, but to other customers as well. Especially in lines that may be held up (I've personally seen fights almost break out over things like this).

I'm also aware that there are some calls a customer might need to make, such as calling someone to ask what they should buy for them, but aimless phone conversations are a form of loitering.

similar prob (and similarly annoying) : people who call your office/store/department and won't believe you when you politely ensure them that they not only got the wrong number but even the completely wrong office.
Last Monday I had a very agitated man on the phone who wanted the water in his building tested for bacteria. When I very politely attempted to explain to him that the local water supplier was who he wanted but not the water-branch of the Ministery For The Environment he got very offensive. Later I learned that the colleague at the switchboard had already tried to tell him the same and got insulted as well.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he called every single office with "water" in their name, from the public bath to the wastewater treatment facility. In case he finally found the right number, I hope the local water supplier will charge the shirt off his back for the tests!

I bet there are still people who have the phone number 867-5309 and are annoyed constantly by pranksters calling them up and asking for Jenny.

Backdoor computer viruses. Just removed one and took my laptop in to make sure it was gone for good. Jerks...

AT&T and their routers... I had to switch due to the one I've had getting long in the tooth. Damn good one. This new one, I've had problems with from the start. Same model, but a pain in the rear. Honestly wanted to move up to a newer one, but they said "like for like", which is just bs. Since these ones are WAY out of date.

a router can't do much about blocking viruses. But you could restrict the number of accessible ports on your computer to reduce possible infection paths. And of course use a good anti-virus software.

Btw, it appears to be router week: my one shut down completely this week and it took me 3 days and a complete reset to coax it into running again.

I drove behind this woman a couple days ago who not only dorve below the speed limit in the left lane, but she also braked in the middle of a four-way stop during a green light, then turned on her blinker in the forward lane while not going into the turning lane. Then all the cars in the turning lane turns and left and right as the arrow turns yellow, the car suddenly decides to get into the lane and try to speed up and make it but of course did not.

Yes, people miss things and make mistakes, that's understandable. All this happened in half a mile. If somebody is that oblivious in that short a distance, I'm worried about sharing the road with them.

Yea. And it doesn't help that it was an older one :(.

Have pretty good anti virus (Avast!), it blocked 9 sites from downloading viruses onto my computer (via those nasty ad actors). This one just got past it. Luckily SuperAntiSpyware spotted it. And thankfully the router sent up a red flag about a UDP attack at the time. Appreciated the warning.

What's the best way to go about shutting down the ports?

George Carlin did quite a lot of bits about bad drivers "here's a lady backing out of a bush, this guy's had his blinker on since 1955, etc."

But yeah, there are a lot of truly clueless people driving cars and sometimes I think they're the biggest menace on the road, simply because they aren't aware what they're doing.

With some routers you can close open ports using the router settings. For example, all Siemens routers of the Speedport-series have an option to lock ports in their security settings.

Alternatively, you can lock the ports directly on your computer. How that's being done depends on your operating system. Here's a list of google-results for all OSs. You'd have to narrow them down by adding your OS to the search parameters

Weak flavoring in chips. If I buy a chip, I want it to have a strong, robust flavor.

Thanks rhubarbodendron. I'll be locking the ones that are more at risk for hacking in.

My car being broken down. :sigh:
That sucks, TayLaLaLa :(. Hope you can get it fixed soon. *hugs*

My old tv decided to die on me... it's been shutting off more and more lately. So now onto moving another one in to see if I can get to work as a 'transition' tv for now.

^ I appreciate it! :)

It just seems like bad timing given what is going on with my dad and the weather here.

I don't have a TV and watch everything online but I do miss a bigger screen. My laptop does the job but I have to be right up on it.
