Things that frustrate us all

Yeah sounds like Misophonia to me. I've noticed that I get disproportionately angry about sounds that don't seem to bother other people much.

Personally, I have better things to do than sit around for 25 minutes, watching (or trying not to watch) someone else eating a sandwich.

I like to take my time eating, but even I don't need 25 minutes for a sandwich.

Depends on how big the sandwich is. ;)

Is it only me mildly disturbed by the idea he's not only spent 25 minutes observing this, but opted to give a real time report on one strangers behaviour and interactions to a room full of other strangers?

If it is misaphonia it’s a real psychological issue, don’t mock.
That wasn't mocking. If you're that affected by the sound of someone eating a sandwich, the best way to deal with it is not to sit there and continue watching and listening to it for 25 minutes.

Anyway, Captain alex, I merged your thread with an existing one we had on frustrations we have, since it has a similar premise.

Don't worry, Captain Alex, you are not alone. I have a colleague who always sticks his tongue out with every bite he takes, like a safety net or a diving board. It drives me totally nuts. Or my dad always sucking in his food at a distance, like a vacuum cleaner, instead of simply putting the fork into his mouth, closing the lips around it and pulling it out, like every normal human does. Or the people who hold their cutlery in a way that makes you wonder how they manage not to break their arms while eating. Not to mention the inevitable (and highly annoying!) sweets-bag-rustler in a classical concert - I could rant on for days!

Wow, Garth, your profession sounds like fun and I can very well understand why you don't want to give it up. A friend of mine is a post production coordinator and sound specialist. He has the same problem as you: no long-term contracts, so like you he works as a freelance mainly for indie productions (you might perhaps have seen Black Scorpion where he did the sound editing in the first 6 epis). If you like, I can get the two of you into contact.

well, if it's full of sticky peanut butter it can take a bit longer to eat. Also, I'm someone who eats very slowly and chews well while others gulp down huge bites without even so much as touching them with their teeth (those are the people who end up with stomach ulcers :p ). But 25 mins for a sandwich - even a big one or one that sticks to the roof of your mouth - is really rather extreme

Fixed the name for you. ;)

I haven't seen Black Scorpion but I'll definitely make it a point to check it out now. For the rest, I'll send you a PM.

Thanks!

My heartfelt appologies, Garth!

And thanks for fixing the error!

which leads us directly to my personal arrrrgh of the day: confusing people's names. Getting older sucks! You mix up names, write a shopping list so as to not forget anything and then promptly forget the darned list, you can't sleep properly, you keep hitting 2 keys at the same time, your health gets worse, you feel your body and mind crumbling apart - everyone wants to grow old, but nobody wants to be it!

edited to add: and you misspell thread titles! Argh!!!

I'm unable to remember people's names. Literally, I'm hopeless. Doesn't have anything to do with age, either, I've always been this way and I'm only 45 with no other signs of early dementia. I'm just glad I'm not in sales or in any profession where my problem could literally affect my income. For me, it's more an embarrassment than anything else. Especially as I come from a culture where people go out of their way to avoid addressing each other by name. This means I can get away with my lack more often than not, but I also don't hear the name often enough to make it stick.

I have difficulties to remember names, too. I can easily remember faces, but names..... they are not my forte at any rate.

It can be hard to remember at times, one job had me at least one new location every week and sometimes more than one. Not easy to remember 10-20+ new names every week. Esp. when I wasn't likely to be back there except for maybe a day for a follow up visit in a months time.

When I was in high school, I went to a school with over 3,000 students. Learning everyone's name was impossible. I got through it by saying "Hi!" Or "Hey!" Or saying anything to avoid saying anyone's name I didn't know. But, somehow they all knew my name.

Which has led to some awkward situations 20 years later. Whenever I run into someone from high school, they recognize me (I haven't changed much) and remember my name. Whereas with me, I have no idea who they are, I don't remember what they looked like, I can't recognize them, and I still have no idea what their name is. "Remember me from ____ class?" That's the point where I'm like "Oh yeah!!!!" while lying through my teeth.
