Things that frustrate us all

Is this a land line or cell phone? If it's a cell phone, your carrier might have an app that blocks some numbers automatically if they're already known offenders and flags others as suspicious.

I use my cell phone for calls, texts, and taking pictures.

And going online, like here. (The only computer I have is my work laptop. I will not use my work laptop for non-work things. It's not my property, so I'm not going to abuse it.)

I have. Each time. Every instance is from a different number.
Do the numbers have something in common? If so, you can block a range of numbers. For example, I got spam calls from a fake number that appeared to be Belgian. As I currently have no friends there, I blocked all Belgian numbers.
Another used some 20 extensions of the same basic number, so I blocked the root number they all were associated to.

Sadly, no.

They have been from all over the place... California, Iowa, Idaho, Florida. There's also the chance they are using a phone clone. (Or something like that term...I don't know the exact term, but I have heard someone can call another but have the ID show up as a different number.)

yes, they do that over here, too. They use internet phone calls and fake their numbers.
Here in Bavaria, their newest tactic is to fake the emergency call number. It is an outrage but they are almost impossible to catch.

What you can do (but be warned: in some countries it counts as doing severe bodily harm) is to blow a very loud whistle when they call you. It can render them deaf for life and therefore is forbidden in Germany. But perhaps in the US it would count as self defense? You better ask a lawyer before trying it.

Spoofing. It happens to me as well. If I don't recognize the number I just let it go to VM and call them back if I know the person. Most phones allow you to report a number as spam as well, but the spoofing tends to get around that.

Spoofing, that's it! Thanks.

Normally, I only pick up the phone if it's someone I know, too.

But we have had the need for services (getting calls back for roofing estimates when we were getting the repair done, for example) where I would have to respond to a number I didn't recognize. But during the times where we aren't in the need for something, I return to my non-answering method. It's just lately we have had to get estimates on a few different things, so it's a frustration for now.

That's a sound tactic. I never answer calls from an unknown number but note it down and check it online. If the number is reported as spam or scam, I block it. If there is no negative record, I call back.

You could always try Tom Mabe's favorite trick. (he's a radio DJ over here)

A telemarketer called him and he answered the phone pretending to be a sheriff investigating a murder scene. :guffaw:

no use with phone scammers in Germany: I used to answer the phone by pretending to be from the local CID (by permission of the CID, I might add; we work closely together) and the callers totally ignore it. I also tried answering as the local crematorium or cemetry - it's perfectly hopeless. These callers just run down their text like answering machines and don't listen at all to what you say. I wish I could reach through the line and strangle them, cartoon-style.
