Thinga-magigy

KHAN was on Cinmax this morning, so we watched the last half..and in that scene where the Genesis device is activated by Mr. Roark...there is this strang looking orange/cone panel behind spock's station making all of these sounds and flickers...my son asked me what that was and what did it do?

I had no idea...then I got to thinking, there have been many thinga-magigs on TREK that are just there doing who knows what...like those blinking spiral devices that are in the Regula One station and then are shown in TREK V's shuttle bay....can you think of hardware on the either of the treks that have some uknown function and you wondered...WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???

It's not strictly technology per se, but I've often wondered what the point of the 'scrolling' blue-green lights are above the console in the science labs on Voyager. If it's an aesthetics thing, surely that's pretty distracting while you're doing your work? :p

Voyager's got a few of those oddly animated things - like the "scanning blips" behind Kim and Tuvok at their stations, and the lights on the transporter control that looks like an expanding crosshair.

(and although this isn't technology at all - where did those corridors off the bridge and briefing room lead to on Voyager? Is it the same place as that never-used door in Janeway's ready room?)

I always wondered why Quark had Van Der Graaf generators inset in the surface of his bar...
