Thieving bastards!

I thought comprehensive auto insurance doesn't cover theft of items that aren't part of the vehicle in any circumstance. Some homeowner or apartment renter policies might include coverage on items stolen from a vehicle, but there might be significant deductibles and exclusions associated with unlocked vehicles.

The thing that puzzles me is that the purse and laptop weren't the last things carried to the car from the old home and carried into the new apartment on the first trip in (thus not left unattended in the car at all).

You're probably correct.

We aren't living there yet. We had just stopped by to drop off some boxes from storage. It was literally less than 50 feet from the car to the door of the apartment and there were two of us walking back and forth. Had it occurred to us that one of our new neighbors might be watching from a concealed location, waiting to snatch our belongings from the floorboard and make off with them the instant we were both inside the apartment at the same time, we would have done as you suggest. Or, you know, locked the door.

well, the purse was discovered this morning in some bushes. The only things missing were her cards, which she had already cancelled.

I had my phone service suspended until I can get a new one and changed all of my internet passwords just in case. I'll be contacting my insurance company after the holiday weekend to see what can be done there.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I'll definitely look into some of these fancy security precautions for my next phone and laptop. Or perhaps I'll just install a self-destruct in my next laptop that can be remotely activated. Klingon bastards.

Dude, that SUCKS! Did they smash your window in? Make sure you file a report and get all the fiance's credit cards cancelled (as well as your phone service) ASAP.

People are scum.

Yeah, we did those things immediately.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I would be angry if it happened to me.

One of my friends is upset because her young son (about 9 years old) was in hospital having an operation and someone stole his Gameboy while he was sleeping.

Uggh. People suck.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Notify the police and the facility management then go hunt the bastards down Rambo-style... Or see if your insurance will cover it.

lol. Yeah, really! I want to leave all of my car doors open and wait in the bushes to see who approaches. My fiance thinks that this is a bad idea.

Maybe it's a neighbourhood initiation ritual and you'll get them back tomorrow...

(... don't hold your breath... :D )

LOL! Yeah, I'm sure everything will be returned at the surprise party! My neighbors, what a bunch of rascals!

Thanks, guys.

I was really careful last time I moved, even though I was told nothing would happen, I didn't like leaving the electronics unattended. Glad I was, but sorry for you about your problem.

Could've been a couple of kids who rode by on a bike with a backpack.

Thanks.

I typically am as well. I wasn't in this instance and am having to pay for it.

Yeah, it might have been. Based on where the purse and debit card were found, I think it was likely a teenager. An adult would probably dispose of them more effectively. But I'll never know for sure.
