They should get Joel Goldsmith to do the score.

Checking the IMDb, apart from his work alongside his dad on First Contact, Joel Goldsmith's career has mostly been in TV and B-movies. Despite his very distinguished father, I don't think that's the sort of pedigree they're going for.

It's been pretty much confirmed that Michael Giacchino will be doing it anyway, and apart from being the obvious choice since he's Abrams's frequent collaborator, he's also, I'd wager, a better composer.

No way. Just watched The Incredibles again the other night. Michael Giacchino will do just fine. His style adapts to whatever project he is working on. I can't wait for him to throw down some classic TOS style cues.

Me too. Michael Giacchino IMO is more talented than Joel Goldsmith. Other than his connection to his father who scored several Trek movies what recommends him for doing the score?

Not that I'm championing Joel Goldsmith, but what's wrong with a TV composer? Most big names have gotten their start with TV such as Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, and yes even Michael Giacchino.

I don't think it'll be a deciding factor for movie-goers on who will be doing the music. The director will get whoever they feel comfortable with to score their project. In Abrams' case, he likes Michael Giacchino.

Honestly, though...Michael Giacchino seems to have about the same type of credits as Joel Goldsmith. If anything, I'd say they are in the same league.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a TV composer. Giacchino started in TV and video games and has done some great stuff for both of those (and still does, in the case of Lost). Bear McCreary is a TV composer and has done some of the most incredible scoring I've heard for Battlestar Galactica.

However, the fact that Joel Goldsmith hasn't broken out of his decidedly second-tier status yet despite his lengthy career and family heritage likely indicates that he hasn't distinguished himself in such a way as to make him desirable for a major project such as this.

What do you think?

I think other than it being a fan-wank topic of conversation, Joel Goldsmith doesn't bring much to the table as far as ability. He is not his father.

Secondly, I think they are going for a completely different style of music than previous Trek scores. What would be the point of bringing him aboard?

Giacchino's work on "The Incredibles" was, well, what's the word I'm looking for? Incredible?

I think I'd have been marginally happier with Danny Elfman (fine scores for "Batman", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Planet of the Apes" among others), but Abrams didn't ask me. :) In all, the scoring of the movie is in good hands with Giacchino. It'll swing, man. Really swing.

Giacchino will do great. Very talented and multifaceted composer. Joel Goldsmith has done some neat stuff, but not enough to really distinguish himself.

That was Giacchino on The Incredibles? Didn't pay attention to the credits so all I can say is... great news! I still remember his work on Medal of Honor, great game with awesome music.

I'm half-inclined to go for Murray Gold, but I'm sure that Giacchino will do fine.

JJ has a great relationship with a fine composer (Giachino) and is tasked to bring Trek to a new generation.

so why on Earth would he bring in Goldsmith?

Well...he has been continuously busy with the Stargates for the past ten years. Maybe he'll be able to find other work now that one of the series is over. Then again, maybe he's happy where he is at.

I've always wanted James Newton Howard to do it. I would love to hear his elegant, glossy crescendos in a Trek movie.

Wow, that was exactly my thought the other day. I was listening to his fantastic work for "Lady in the Water" and some cues reminded me of the best of Horner or Goldsmith. I'd love to have him do the score!

That is what I've been thinking for years... well since 'The Treasure Planet' actually ;)
