"They Live" remake

Well, believe it or not, the original was meant to be a political statement about NeoConservatism and the Reagan administration. The suggestion being that the aliens controlled people through the media and had created a sort of permanent underclass out of the hapless humans who weren't aiding and abetting the "invasion".

I always considered the film's use of aliens to be a cop-out. What's the point of attacking conservatives, or the Reagan administration, or indeed any humans at all, if it's ultimately aliens who are responsible for the whole thing?

Oh, come on...you've seen Trek. What was the point of having the half-black/half-white people be aliens if the story is really about race relations here on Earth? It's an allegory. Science Fiction has often been used as a vehicle about exploring man's own relationship with humankind.

The Day The Earth Stood Still is loaded with political commentary. So why did we need an alien and his giant robot in it?

Then again, I *am* a conservative, so obviously I'm not in this film's target market anyway. Although I have seen the original. I thought it was fairly silly.

(The funniest thing I saw in the film was that bit where a billboard with a hot babe on it is revealed to have the words 'Marry And Reproduce' instead. As if there's supposed to be something wrong with marrying and reproducing? )

I have some vague recollection of Meg Foster doing a nice job as a villainous turncoat. I don't remember Piper at all, though. But they should do the remake as a parody of Blindness, with the glasses symbolically representing Marxism!

I dunno if anyone here has read the "Ten O'Clock People" by Stephen King. It's based on the same premise. A group of people who smoke at a specific time of the day are able to perceive a group of aliens/monsters masquerading as powerful humans. Very cool story.

On that basis, you could argue that it's one of those films that really SHOULD be remade. I wouldn't exactly call it a piece of shit, but neither is it award-winning material (beyond a nomination for "best fight scene" perhaps).

I like the pause, there. You're right, of course. I'm not sure we have an equivalent to "Rowdy" Roddy Piper making movies today.

The quality wasn't that bad, but the premise was genius. People are so fooled by mindless consumerism that they can't see they are being conditioned and manipulated.

Someone else said (so I can't claim credit for this comment) that it was a great idea, but the execution wasn't quite up to scratch. Not awful, just not as great as you might think it deserves to be.

They Live is one of my favorite B-movies. The premise has such potential that I'm happy to see a remake in in motion. I just hope they manage to keep the subversive edge of the original.

Yeah, for a B-movie, it was great. I've always enjoyed it. Not so sure about a remake, but I'll probably see it if they do.
