These Are The Voyages - Your Opinion, Please

I'm current watching all of Trek in chronological order. The thread for that is over here. I just last night finished season three and will be starting season four later this week.

The big question is in regards to "These Are the Voyages." Logically, the best place for it would be with "The Pegasus," but then I got to thinking . . .

It would be a good episode to use as a transition into "The Cage" and the original series, with the formation of the Federation and all that. What if I just fast forwarded through all the Riker/Troi scenes and just stuck with the Ent crew scenes?

It would only be, like, half an episode, but I can't help but think this might work for me. What do you guys think?

If you're going to try to watch it after watching "The Pegasus," your brain will implode from the strain of trying to fit the two together. I recommend you skip This Ain't The Valentine.

Watch it after the Pegasus. Like that you can treat Terra Prime as the finale, which works very good.

Something I found really helps your enjoyment when watching it is having read "The Good That Men Do". It makes the episode pretty funny.

Just watch it at the end of season 4 where it belongs. Of course, I'd recommend not watching it at all. But if you skip the framing story, it will be even more of a frustrating experience. Besides, Riker and Troi are also within the holoprogram so you can't really skip over the 24th century parts entirely, anyway.
Alternatively, you could also watch it at the end of your Trek marathon, since the episode's end was intended to be a closing for Trek on TV.

Just watch it at the end of Season 4 where it belongs. Maybe you won't hate it. I don't.

I still don't understand why they felt like they needed to make a "bonus episode" after the series finale had already aired. :wtf:

Strangely enough when watching in chrono order, I like to leave In a Mirror, Darkly until the end... because you basically get told what our Archer's fate was there, through their MU counterparts. Plus it's Original Series-ness feeds quite nicely into The Cage & WNMHGB.

But These Are the Voyages... (sigh), I tried watching that after Terra Prime. Then I tried it again after TNG: The Pegasus. It didn't work in either place if I'm honest.

If you have to watch it, I recommend reading The Good That Men Do, a novel-come-apology to ENT fans... straight after.

If there was an audio book read by Connor Trinneer, that would work even better if you don't have a few days to spare. You could listen to it. It's something Pocket Books or Simon & Schuster audioworks should seriously think about...

I feel it lacked in comparison to the other finales...and the death of Trip did'nt cut it for me. Thank goodness for Michael Martin and Andy Mangels' GTMD. 'Props' to those guys.As I said elsewhere, it needed a stronger issue for the crew to go out on....rescuing Shran's daughter was seeming like just another element in the plot, not a big event, which we've been used to so far in series-Trek, certainly by comparison, and too much revisiting Pegasus, but seeing Will and Deanna was nice, in any case. And yes, the little legacy homage at the end..c'mon, how can any Trekkie hate that?

Hmmmm.

I read "The Good That Men Do" when it first came out and was planning on a re-read anyways . . .

Maybe I will just wait for "The Pegasus."

Can't the TrekBBS programming wizards just create a filter for new posts that contain the title "These are the voyages" or "finale" or "Riker and Troi" (posted specifically in THIS area of the forum) just have this picture pop up:

Edited for better picture workiness.

There is nothing more you can say other than it was a miserable failure. So much so that CBS/Paramount had to write two books to completely invalidate it.

Methinks this subject deserves an Enterprise facepalm.

Rather than thinking of TATV as the series finale, think of it as a coda. Then it works in context as simply a mediocre episode.
