These Are The Voyages Volumes 4 and 5...

For those who are interested it has been confirmed that the first three books about TOS' development, production and ending will be followed up by two more volumes.

Volume 4 will pick up just after TOS' cancellation and cover the period of the '70s (including TAS) and early '80s. It will cover TOS' great success in syndication, the explosion of ensuing fandom and the ups-and-downs of trying to bring back Star Trek, resulting in TAS, the aborted Phase II series, TMP and the subsequent films. The volume will end on the announcement of Star Trek returning to television as TNG. Volume 4 is slated to be released in 2016 for TOS' 50th anniversary.

Volume 5 will cover the development and production of TNG and its first season and thus setting the stage for what followed. No word yet whether any other volumes will cover the rest of TNG. Volume 5 is slated to be released in 2017 for TNG's 30th anniversary.

And although not Trek related there will also be a book covering the development and production of Lost In Space and how that show came to morph from what it began as into what it became.

I will say that despite some concerns and criticisms I have enjoyed reading the TATV books and I am interested to read the next volumes. I'm undecided as to whether I would read a book about Lost In Space, but who knows. The story behind the show could be interesting.

I'd be more interested in a book on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, since so little has been done on that series other than fan publications. Lost in Space's evolution, while I'm sure glossed over as much as Trek's was until the reference books started coming out, is fairly well known.

Bah, I guess I'll have to write it myself one day...

on the one hand i would really like a Lost in Space book...on the other hand i don't trust Cushman at all.

Oh goody. Now he can foul up the history of Planet of the Titans too.

And muck up the history of "Star Trek: Phase II" and make further unsupported claims about the tumultuous first season of TNG. Wonder if he'll do some real journalism and talk to those in that latter production that are still alive ... oh never mind, what am I saying.

His books are what we will have until someone else steps forward to write the "definitive" version.

I co-produced this. Isn't that enough?

Neil
I know you did and I, among many others, are grateful. But I haven't read one "history of" book of Trek that was perfect and error free. Harvey's blog looking at Inside Star Trek alone shows that and that is a well regarded work.

This is fan art.

That's fairly nice fan art. Unfortunately, I'm lacking a little context for why that is relevant to TATV vols. 4&5, which by the way, in both cases, I'm looking forward to not adding to my book collection.

Here's the answer. The gift that keeps on giving!

OK, that link takes me to some highlights of the debacle surrounding uncredited use of a piece of The Lensman's art in TATV vol. 1. I'm fully aware of that train wreck, which is completely and utterly of Cushman's own making. That train wreck includes ongoing mischaracterization of that fan art by Cushman in a way:

- that reflects of an absence of both expertise and ethical discipline in being willing to print mistaken and unsubstantiated speculation as historical truth,

- that indicates not having performed adequate research,

- that seems more concerned with saving face than correcting errors,

- and that is just one example among many of Cushman's refusal to assign due credit to the sources of the images he uses in the book.

That last point regarding the assignment of credit to the source of imagines represents a whole additional set of issues, of which I'm well aware, but about which at this point others are probably better-suited to speak than I.

All that said, not to be dense, sorry but I'm still not seeing how this TMP fan art here pertains to Cushman's books.  :(

Since he's writing about the films, I figured some fan art from TMP could creep into his book. If he sees this thread, I hope he realizes that the image I've shared is indeed fan art.

Humor, it is a difficult concept. It is not logical.

OK so, to be clear, that particular fan art has not in fact been used in conjunction with the books. See, given what's transpired so far with respect to volume 1, I think it's fair to wonder exactly what your point was: was it that we can expect fan art to creep in the upcoming volumes, or is it that it already has? I was, in fact, wondering if there was some promotional poster for the books that I should be looking at, so I was trying to get you to clarify between the two alternatives there. It's not like I didn't get it, but it's that I don't really see anything funny in the willful uncredited monetization of other peoples' work.

I'm trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Why isn't this thread in the "Fan Fiction" section?

Is the bibliography in his books at least worth exploring? Or is it just wordswordswords with no accreditation?
