There isn't enough Trek products for the very young

It has seemed to me that there are not enough Trek products for younger people.

Back in the 1970s, there were Trek coloring books and all kinds of stuff for very young fans.

You don't see that today.

I think it is important to help develop new fans for the future.

It's a shame. I got my son into Star Wars via the toys. Unfortunately, there isn't the abundance of Trek stuff as Star Wars. Most young people I've interacted with don't hold an interest in Trek. Few of my students are interested in it, unless they have a parent who is a trekker.

In a way, it's sort of similar to the situation with today's comic books--it's skewed towards an older audience than a younger one. Some have said that it's because it reflects the times we live in, which simply aren't very kid friendly--we like stuff to be serious and sophisticated. Don't know if I agree with that, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some truth to that.

I remember having TOS coloring books, TOS action figures, water guns, disc shooters, and other kid-oriented merchandise that you could take out of the box and have rough 'n' tumble adventures with.

Perhaps if Star Trek XI has a line of stuff not geared for the collector's market but for retail store shelves...

I would. I think something else is true: That these products, once popular with children, are now only popular with adults who were introduced to them as children. Star Trek has been off the air since 2005. That may not mean much to you or me, but that's an eternity in the amnesiac world of childre's entertainment.

So maybe kids aren't reading comic books, but they're playing video games, not watching Star Trek, but they do watch Heroes, and so on.

Rest assured, the new Star Trek film will have toys and other kid-friendly merchandise. Given the media savvy of those involved, I'd be astonished if this was not the case.

I agree! My nephew is 20 months old and I've bought him every Trek product I can find for the under 5 crowd and it ammounts to a handful of stuff "animals" and a few shirts! :S

He has a plush 1701 (which annoys me to no end as it's nacelles have NO support ability and end up looking like they need viagra badly) two stuffed Spock bears (large and little) a FC bear, and a Voyager bear. Plus two shirts; old school "All I Need to Know" TNG shirt and a "Captain, this diaper can't take anymore!" newer one. Hehehehe.

I've given him my 1992 Playmates E-D, too, as it's broke (sound/light) and he likes to hold it up and sing "De de, de de de de de!" (TOS theme)

Well, my nephew doesn't really know what it is, but he likes it! He likes Spock, he knows the Enterprise flys around, and he sings the theme song! :)

they should do a new star trek cartoon. i do agree with the original poster that there is a real lack of products for young people. You look at an intellectual property like Star Wars and you can get some ideas about how to bring younger fans in.

Do you really think that the toys bring in new young fans, or is it the fans that buy the toys?

You've got to have the products on hand for a market to develop.

Virtually no products are developed in response to crowds of people demanding them.

We need coloring & activity books. Snap together models that young kids can assemble without being an engineer. Toys that the very young can enjoy.

I've heard people complaining for years that the Trek fan base is aging.

The only cure for an aging base is attracting younger people.

Youngsters need products aimed at them

also tv-shows needs people the young can identify with, I know that Wesley Crusher is loathed and all but when I watched TNG at about age 9 Wesley was the person I could somewhat identify with and to me he was the coolest guy because he was smart and he sometimes knew more than the grown ups, and I dare say he was a part of me becoming a trekkie.

Or maybe they don't like it because for years now Trek has catered to older fans and not newer ones.

Ok well how about

- a Mr. Spock science kit. Fascinating.

- a TNG phaser for the Wii !!!

- Counsellor Troi's Coloring Books :)

- Kirk vs. Gorn rock 'em sock 'em !!!

- A talking Wesley doll w/several different sweaters for misskim :)

- Tribbles complete with tribble sound FX !!

I think I'd end up elbowing a kid out of the way for the Wii phaser...

I remember shortly after FC came out my mother got me a Borg Sphere toy, it was maybe a little smaller than a volley ball.

At first I thought it was cool, but then reality kicked in and I realized it did absolutely nothing, it had a little pop off section to simulate an explosion I guess and that was it, other than that I was the proud owner of a plastic ball that didn't roll, bounce and if you threw it at someone you could be charged with attempted murder.

The toys dont seem to have been well thought out.

That's being generous. I don't think Trek has really been marketed as a family show a child might be interested in since TNG. I'd say the last hey-day of Trek was the mid-90s, that's when there was a lot of Trek product.
