Those are some head scratchers. Is Stoops afraid of the NFL?
My guess is that he probably doesn't want the commitment since he is "semi-retired." The XFL season is only 10 weeks long, and the players will be more impressionable (kind of like the NCAA players he is use to coaching) than the veterans he would be coaching in the NFL. Just a theory.

It's plausible that undrafted players could use the XFL like undrafted NBA players use the European league. That might be the XFL's best hope.

I wonder how far they'll go in taking away player protections. The fans most angry with the NFL will love that. But, with the science we know now I wonder how many players would be okay with that. I suppose people with no fallback option but sports. People who lost their scholarship because they got a broken leg.

I'll be interesting where they try to establish teams. St Louis is pretty obvious. Oklahoma City seems like another obvious target they might be eyeing. Huge college following, no NFL team but obviously can support an NBA team. Places with huge college football presence but no pro football presence like Alabama. Will also be interesting if they go after liberal markets with weak pro sports coverage like Portland and soon San Diego. Also hard to believe they wouldn't try to target the huge football fan bases in Texas, Pennsylvania and Ohio, even though they have good sports coverage already.

We should have an XFL location prediction pool. My initial speculation:
St Louis
Oklahoma City
Alabama
San Diego
New Jersey
Colombus
Nashville
San Antonio

It looks like the XFL will be making a play for NCAA rookies to snake them from the NFL...

Gotta love Vince's ambition.

The XFL announced it's television deal and schedule today. They have contracts to put shows on two legacy networks and two cable networks. The networks will be paying for production costs and splitting the advertising revenue, so it looks like the XFL will be getting paid (unike the AAF).

Interesting that the Dallas team is using Globe Life Park. I wonder what effect this will have on the continuing development of the place, assuming the new XFL lasts that long.

(Fortunately, the Texas Rangers will already have moved out by the time the XFL gets its hands on the building.)

What other plans did they have for Globe Life Park? Seems to me they would be happy to have a new tenant paying rent if they are losing the old one.

I've just read through this thread, and I've seen a lot of comments about how McMahon could make this work. Well, I'm probably not his target audience, since I was mainly interested in reading this thread because of the idea of competing with an entrenched competitor, and I haven't been a big sports fan since those effing KC Royals cheated in '85. That said, there is a *chance* that I might find something like this appealing if it met certain criteria:

1. I like the idea of games fitting into a 2 hour time slot - 3 hours at most - with maybe a chance of 30 minutes to an hour of overtime play if necessary to decide a game. I don't want to spend a whole day on watching a game.
2. Have women's teams that play each other included in the lineups. Don't force sexualization on players of either genders (but also don't prevent the players from "dolling up" for characters *if they want to*). Do games with both genders where safe/practical.
3. Borrow the idea of intro music, pyrotechnics, and multimedia displays for the teams from the WWE. *Encourage* players to have endzone celebrations as long as they aren't too long in duration, allow them to have aspects to their uniforms that make them distinctive on the field while still clearly showing their team, and maybe even allow players to have a signature move that they're allowed to do even if it isn't technically quite legal in the game - as long as collectively, game balance is preserved.
4. Keep politics, positive or negative, as completely out *of the games* as possible. No kneeling, no anthem, no political banners in the stands. On the other hand, ZERO censorship of the players *outside* of the games - politics, porn, whatever - and it should be made clear that, just like with the WWE, the characters the players play in the game aren't *them*, however similar or different they may be in real life.
5. Use *entertaining* sportscasters. Having former players who really understand the game and who can be insightful is great for the NFL, but is BORING for people like me. I'd rather have entertaining characters - they need to understand the game, but it doesn't need to be that deep. The closest I can remember the NFL coming was Dennis Miller - and they got him after he had gotten really bitter with life and had stopped being funny.

I know a lot of this might sound like blasphemy to some of you. But we're not talking about the NFL. The NFL is already the NFL. This new league needs to carve out a new niche, not try to take the NFL's. Also, bear in mind that while I'm suggesting playing to the strengths of things that McMahon may be used to with the WWE, I'm not suggesting that the games be scripted, faked, or rigged.

I should mention that my feelings won't be hurt if you've got 9000 reasons you think I'm wrong. Like I said, I'm not a sports guy, and I'd enjoy hearing *any* feedback. (Maybe I'll start my own XFL, but with hookers and blackjack. ;) )

The league has already said they are doing # 1 and # 4 from your list. They tried # 3 and # 5 back in 2001, so they will probably be pretty cautious about doing that again this time around. You really lost me with # 2. Female professional football leagues do exist, and they garner almost no interest. Or, are you suggesting women play against men? The liability insurance would cost too much.

I'll be watching because Houston has a team, but I don't expect this league to last. They never do. I hope they come up with a better name for the team than the Houston NFL team did. LOL

What amazes me is they got Fox and ABC to broadcast a game every week. I wonder if McMahon paying them to do it. LOL

The Houston's team name is Roughnecks, which I actually like better than the Texans. The Roughnecks HC is June Jones, who coached for the Gamblers, Oilers and in the CFL. I think this league will last it's first year just fine, but like all these leagues, I think it will collapse quickly enough after that.

The Houston Roughnecks are 5-0!!

I didn't see anyone banging trash can lids so they're probably legit.

I thought the Roughnecks name, uniforms and helmets were all better than the Texans. Not to mention they were far more entertaining.

I thought the Tampa Bay Vipers color scheme was taken straight from a BP gas station.

As if it wasn't bad enough being saddled with Mark Trestman as an ineffective HC.

That's a shame. It probably would have failed eventually, the NFL doesn't like competition of any kind, but the XFL was a cool way to kill some time on a Saturday or Sunday before baseball season.
I thought the idea was that the XFL wasn't to compete with the NFL but simply fill in the off-season void.

I think the NFL sees any other league as competition, but having it off-season might have kept the XFL out of the crosshairs.

Maybe if the XFL were utilized like a minor league type of organization to the NFL would have been the way to go. Rather than the NFC East being the AAA equivalent that is.
