There are more episodes of Simon & Simon...

than original Star Trek! Simon & Simon aired throughout most of the 1980s. (Stars Major Dad and some other guy; 1981-1988)

Of course TOS grew in popularity in syndication and then bloomed into multiple films and TV versions.

Why hasn't Simon and Simon bloomed into another series spinoff and multiple movies and toy tie-ins?

Why!!!!!!????

Yeah, and Star Trek once had its primo time slot given to Laugh In. How long a show stays on the air has as much (and perhaps more) to do with ratings and politics as it does with how good the show actually is.

Storytelling, maybe? :vulcan:

Simon & Simon was just a cop show. Yes the two leads were quirky characters but every cop show has quirky characters. Never did I feel awe, joy or even personal commitment while watching Simon & Simon, emotions I often feel to this day watching Star Trek. Again, it was just a cop show.

Plus, do I need to say the obvious? You can't remember the names of either of the two leads, and can't even name another acting role for one of them, and you wonder why the show is forgettable?

Well ... they were both in an episode of Magnum, P.I.

I think you were spot on about the "just another cop show" angle. The private detective genre has had a steady string of different series and a constant supply of mediocre or better shows. From Mannix and Cannon to Murder, She Wrote right up through Monk, there's nothing to distinguish one from another. Had there been no other P.I. TV show, I'm sure Simon and Simon would have had a stronger following.

Now I think you're flat out wrong about the leads. Jameson Parker was very popular during the 1980s and early 90s, especially with the teen girl crowd. He did fade away a bit after that, but so did most of the cast of TOS after it ended. Gerald McRaney has had fairly steady work since, most recently in Jericho. He's very good for TV authoritarian roles.

Jameson Parker played the male lead in my favorite cheesy '80s horror film (John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness").

(Though IMO he was miscast.)

And Thomas Magnum was in an episode of Simon & Simon.

I used to love shows like Simon & Simon back in the eighties, when there were only three channels to choose from. Now that I have about 60 channels in my native language, I barely watch any tv show at all.

But Magnum still rules ...

You should have gone with Starsky & Hutch. Then you would have had four different themes for your diabolical plan, since, for some strange reason, they revamped the theme each season.
