There and Back Again: My Car Accident

RoJoHen

Awesome
Admiral
I got in an absolutely ridiculous car accident today.

I left work around noon to go to lunch. On my way back, I was sitting at a dead stop in the left turn lane, waiting for oncoming traffic to break so I could turn back into the parking lot.

Simultaneously, a man was waiting to turn right to exit the same parking lot. When traffic cleared, we should have simply passed each other during the turn. He would turn right onto the street. I would turn left in the parking lot. Easy, right?

Well, he decided that it would be an awesome idea to turn out into the road while he was texting and looking straight down at his phone. I was still at a complete stop, and he took the turn too wide and ran right into my front bumper.

He couldn't have been going more than a couple miles per hour. He was going slow enough for me to process everything that was happening but just too fast for me to be able to react. I saw the top of his bald head. I saw his gaze focused squarely on his phone. I saw him turn and thought, "Really? Is this actually happening right now? Really?!"

When all was said and done, I was more annoyed than anything. The bumper is a little skuffed up, but the damage is minimal. I think I'm just annoyed because it could have been so easily avoided. It barely impacted my day. I got back to work about 20 minutes late, but it was fine. Now I just have to wait for the insurance companies to figure things out and call me back.

Lame.

Always get a police report. January 9, 2011, an old man backed into my driver side door. Fortunately, he told the officer it was entirely his fault so the insurance company paid the claim without hassle.

Yes, yes, I have the police report. The other guy admitted fault. He got a ticket. He also had expired plates.

I'm not worried about the outcome. I'm clearly going to win. I'm just annoyed that it happened.

Glad to see you're not hurt, and that it was more annoyance than anything else, RoJoHen.

^seconded, and totally understand how you feel. Been in similar situations and part really identify with is that strange 'disconnect', where time seems to stand still or slow down, and the thought races through your mind: this can't be happening.

When I saw the title, I was afraid it was going to be much worse. I'm really glad to hear it had so little impact on your day (and your life), and TOTALLY understand your annoyance. Distracted driving is a HUGE pet peeve of mine; and texting is one of the worst and most ubiquitous (though by no means only) forms of it these days.

Hope today is better for you!

Driving isn't like taking a bus where you can do other stuff . . . when you drive you drive, not drive and read, or drive and shave, or drive and text
there's no room for multitasking while driving . . . you'll just kill yourself and other people if you're not careful.

It won't be. I thought "The Deathly Hallows" was coming out on Blu-Ray today, but it's not coming out until Friday. This revelation has completely ruined my life. It's so much worse than a car accident!

Did you try your horn?
There really wasn't time. I was too much in disbelief to think that it was actually happening.

 I don't understand this...usually the processing and reacting happen almost at the same time give or take a second...atleast to be able to blow the horn. I am not trying to bash you or anything...but have a hard time with this.

I am glad you are ok and no one got hurt.

I am sure it does...I have been in a few accidents...most not my fault but I was never in "disbelief" to the point I couldn't react especially when things were happening where I knew what was happening and could process it...for me it has been out the blue when it happen to me...and when it was me it was clearly driver error.

Like I said...glad no one got hurt. :bolian:

Well, I'm talking a period of maybe 2 seconds. Yeah, I saw the guy coming right at me and knew it was happening, but I was also just too dumbfounded to do anything about it.

I also don't think I have ever honked my horn ever since I started driving.

You should work on that. :p

I have maybe honked twice in my life...never had a reason to before.

It wouldn't have accomplished anything in this instance. Even if I did honk, he had no room to maneuver. The only way he could have avoided me would have been for me to back up and get out of his way, and there wasn't time for that.
