Spoilers Theory on the USS Discovery propulsion

That's the oldest, best advice for anyone creating a villain character, whether as an actor or writer. I'm glad he's taken it to heart.

It really is. He has a public question and answer thing he held in Montreal a couple of months ago. He went through playing captain Hook, the doctor from the OA, Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and the commandant in the Patriot. For each character he provided reasons as to why in that characters mind they are correct, they are the hero, that everyone else is incorrect.

It's a longer video but definitely worth it if you're into that dramatic part of film and TV. GENUINLY entertaining, very charismatic person.

I actually think this is a thing...

The Discovery has a (sigh) astromycologist aboard to (deep stress sigh) take advantage of (ugh) mushroom-based propulsion.

I can't spoil why, but I'm a scientist with a weird field of study which is astromycology and that has some interesting applications in science on Star Trek. I'm allowed to say that, so yes, there are some new things explored that are because of space fungus and mushrooms and mycelium.

it appears that somehow space mushrooms will be able to be utilized in some unique way in order to create technology we have not previously seen in Star Trek.

I can't even begin to understand how this concept ever made it into the show.

It's just... FREAKING SPACE-SHROOM PROPULSION?!?

Nothing wrong with that. It sounds very Star Trek.

As I posted elsewhere - it appears to have been inspired by existing technology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microbial_fuel_cell

What's your point?

It's a ridiculous idea if they use transdimensional mushrooms for FTL travel, and it's just as ridiculous if they use a tank full of bacteria to somehow propel them to FTL speeds.

That a dumb idea has a marginal resemblance to something in real life doesn't make it any less ridiculous.

The Federation is going to be the laughingstock of the entire galaxy now, primarily known for being periodically stranded in their fungi-propelled camper-spaceships. And for usually initiating first contact with new species by saying: "Wooah! Righteous man... A new species... Far our! So hey... Your race likes to party?"

I find this idea interesting, if given enough time and thought it could work in sci-fi terms, more sci than fi. But, I have problem there with continuity since we know there was not such propulsion in star trek. But it could work if ship gets destroyed and no one knows about it or if they abandon technology because it causes more problems than benefits.

My theory is that the entire Mycelial Network is destroyed by the Klingons rendering that mode of propulsion useless.

Could this be related to the spores in TOS "This Side of Paradise" in some way? They appeared to be flowers, but they could be fungal pods instead?

Even if not, could they be a fungal intelligence trying to manipulate the Fed/Klingon War for their own purposes?

I get the "Anything Discovery does is bad and I will let the world know so, before they actually even air the epsidode" mentality. It's set in early and strong.

But at the same time, why would say, Species 872 get a pass, or a hyper intelligent talking cat, or the Big Whale Probe Tube Thing, but a transdimensional lifeform creating corridors across worlds, that's just "sigh"

No, Species 872 'Fluidic Space' or whatever it was called was hella stupid too.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Discovery, but this sounds like a major misstep. I really hope that there is some misinformation and the fungus thing is not related to the propulsion at all. In addition of this being stupid, introducing some new super propulsion technology that should not exist in this era is a problem. Seriously, Star Trek does not need a single super special überwarp technology that is mysteriously forgotten later, especially in a prequel show. There was probably like dozen of them in the Voyager alone.

Well, there are a number of Voyager people currently or recently involved in the production, so...

Half the audience complain there's nothing new in this new Trek, and the other half complain at the bits that are new :)

I'm glad to see them trying something a bit original. It's weird, but that's not stopped them before.

A few people in the production shortly before the premiere talked about 'apparent canon breaches' being cleared up later on. I'd take a guess that this is what they were referring to. The drive either doesn't work, or has some fatal drawback we'll find out about later. Dare I say... Salamanders? ;)

What if instead of a propulsion system, it is for the computer systems that allow for better processing speeds and thus better warp calculations. A halfway technology that would eventually result in the bio-neural gel packs, or more realistic holodeck technologies.

If it doesn't relate to propulsion systems, could it be possible it relates to the unity of the Klingon empire somehow... perhaps it can alter Klingon physiology - eg: head ridges, etc - creating a batch of Klingons that get rejected by the 24 clans by introducing the fungus as an organic weapon, into the Klingon worlds - thus splintering their unity, and causing insider racial strife? After all: they have made point of introducing Voq and making a deal of fact that he's albino (?) and perceived as an aberration of nature, by some in Klingon society...

;) Nah - that sounds lame... [saddestmoon gets coat]

INDEED!

This is the most Trek thing in the show so far. Love it. Was it Arthur Clark who said something like "if your prediction of the future seems believable, it can't possibly be accurate."

Which is to say, for it to be accurate, it has to be so unbelievable as to be laughable.

Actually, shouldn’t it look more like this?
