I've no interest in hunting, the idea of stalking through the wilderness for six hours to kill a deer (or in my case, more likely a kangaroo) holds no appeal either in reality or a computer game, but like many gamers I've occasionally derived amusement from the terminally dated flailings of the genre. Deer Hunter, Bass Hunter, Redneck 2000, the trend has been unambiguous. So I was a more than a little thrown by theHunter, which less closely resembles its forebears than it does Crysis graphically, and Rainbow Six (pre-Raven Shield) in its attention to realistic detail. Unsurprisingly it comes from similarly unusual stock in Avalanche, developers of Just Cause. Between the qualities of the game itself and the fact that it's free to play, I'm forced to a grudging respect for this appalling title.

If you've always wanted to know how it feels to have three hours of tracking ruined by an unexpected shift in wind direction, theHunter is probably worth a look.

What next, an EA Sports title that's worth playing?
