Chicago area filmmaker Dan Marcus is set to make his feature film debut directing Falling Awake Productions and Gravitas Productions joint venture The New Society. The film, written by Dan Marcus and David Hammond, will be produced by Anthony Sellitti, Dan Marcus, and Paul D. Woehlke.
The New Society tells the story of a group of social outcasts, who, after years of being bullied, tormented and humiliated by their peers, decide to take drastic and violent action, drawing many around them into a disastrous spiral of events.
Director Dan Marcus debuted with the short film Wake, starring Joshua Brail, Greg Schweiner, and Christina Thodos, and was produced by Ray and Kris Hallowell. The next film from Falling Awake Productions is the superhero short film Fallen, starring Brian Kavanaugh, Errol McLendon, and Andrew Staton. Fallen will premeire exclusively through Dailymotion on Wednesday, June 15th 2011. The film was produced by Brian Levin and Sean Miller. Dan Marcus has a number of other projects in the pipeline. He is currently completing the script and preproduction for the dramatic short film Closure, written by Beau DeMayo and David Hammond. Also in development is Marcus’ fourth short film Flow, a science fiction psychological thriller, set to lens sometime in 2011.
“I’m excited about finally making the leap from smaller projects and short films to a feature-length story”, said Marcus. “It’s a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. I’ve been ruminating and working on The New Society since I was 14, and with the assistance of both David and Anthony, I think we’ve finally cracked a script that I am incredibly excited about. I think it’s very timely and deals with a lot of important contemporary and very relevant issues. It’s a project that is very close to my heart, and holds a lot of meaning for me.”
David Hammond is best known as the co-writer of the successful Batman fanfilm Patient J, directed by Aaron Schoenke of Bat In The Sun Productions. He is a frequent collaborator with Director Dan Marcus, having co-written Wake with Marcus, and Fallen with Brian Levin and Kenneth E. Carper. He will also share story and writing duty on the upcoming short films Closure and Flow. Hammond, an avid actor and singer, is also developing a feature length, community level Batman musical with a number of other talented writers, composers, and designers in the Columbus, Ohio area that is tenatively scheduled to open in 2013.
“The New Society is ultimately a very uncomfortable story”, said Hammond, “The execution of it requires a delicate balance of many character elements and realistic themes, in a world that is meant to be fictional, but in truth, is not far off from where we are now. Behind the drama, and sometimes, admittedly the melodrama, there’s going to be a lot of truth in this, not just about smaller social circles, but about what we perceive to be happening to society as a whole. We’re feeling a lot of responsibility to make the story we’re telling relevant to what’s going on in the world. At the same time, we aren’t pulling any punches. This story deals with some very serious issues and they deserve immense respect, careful consideration, and as much sensitivity as we can give them”.
Anthony Sellitti is an accomplished writer, director, producer, cinematographer and editor with Gravitas Productions. Sellitti will be producing The New Societyand working closely creatively with Marcus and Hammond. Sellitti has directed the horror thriller The Camcorder Killings, as well as gathering acclaim for his early student short film, Adam’s Anna. He is currently in post-production on his next short film entitled Remnants. This spring, he has two larger-scale short films, soon-to-be-announced, that will go into production that he will direct.
“As a young filmmaker, I always try to remain conscious of uprising talent, and I try my best to align myself with those people who share similar sensibilities when it comes to telling good stories”, Sellitti said. “Dan is one of those people. We jive when it comes to all the things that count, and I look forward to collaborating with Dan and Dave on The New Society, where we’re going to push the boundaries for the right reasons and present something special that, in the end, everyone’s going to be dying to sit down and experience.”
Production is set to begin on The New Society in early 2011 for a projected 2012 release.
