Theatrical Release Of Episodes

Several episodes (mainly from TNG) have had one night theatrical releases in theaters. From my recollection, the episodes I have seen were Q Who, Yesterday's Enterprise, Sins of the Father and Best of Both Worlds. I want to say it was to showcase the episodes in either 3D or IMAX. Similar to how TWOK will get limited theatrical releases for one night.

It's a really cool thing Paramount does. I really dig it.

There are over 800 episodes across 10 different series. What are some other episodes you think would make good theatrical releases?

Off the top of my head…

The Way of the Warrior
In The Pale Moonlight
What You Leave Behind
Caretaker
Scorpion
Year of Hell
Workforce
Endgame
Broken Bow
Shockwave
Azati Prime/Damage
In A Mirror, Darkly
Demons/Terra Prime

The three-part arcs that Enterprise did in its final season would also make for an interesting experiment, since combined, they are basically films that last 2 hours and 15 minutes

There was some sort of contractual problem that came up after "The Best of Both Worlds" relating to showing TV episodes in theaters, which is why they didn't do it anymore as they remastered the rest of TNG.

Off the top of my head, in terms of a self-contained compelling story and for the visual experience? It's a short list.

1. "The City on the Edge of Forever" & "Amok Time" (TOS)
2. "Yesterday's Enterprise" & "Sins of the Father" (TNG)
3. "Reunion" & "Redemption" (TNG)
4. "The Way of the Warrior" (DS9)
5. "Caretaker" (VOY)
6. "Scorpion" (VOY)
7. "Year of Hell" (VOY)
8. "The Vulcan Hello" & "Battle at the Binary Stars" (DSC Season 1, episodes 1-2)
9. "Despite Yourself" through "What's Past Is Prologue" (DSC Season 1, episodes 10-13)
10. "Such Sweet Sorrow" (DSC Season 2, episodes 13-14)

11. "Remembrance" through "The End Is the Beginning" (PIC Season 1, episodes 1-3)
12. "Absolute Candor" & "Stardust City Rag" (PIC Season 1, episodes 4-5)
13. "The Impossible Box" through "Broken Pieces" (PIC Season 1, episodes 6-8)
14. "Et in Arcadia Ego" (PIC Season 1, episodes 9-10)

Yeah, I cheated with Picard, so sue me. PIC makes up for the TNG Movies and in my mind it's basically a 10-hour Prime Timeline Star Trek XI. So the whole thing deserves to seen on the Big Screen.

Sat down to examine my Trek Library. If the episodes were bundled together like this for a theatrical release, IMAX, 4K whatever. I'd pay to see these on the big screen. A lot of the early season multipart stories work well for theater experiences.

TOS - Amok Time and Doomsday Machine

TOS & ENT - Mirror, Mirror and In A Mirror, Darkly

TNG - Q Who and Best of Both Worlds

TNG - Yesterday's Enterprise and Sins of the Father

TNG - Reunion and Redemption

DS9 - The Jem'Hadar and The Search

DS9 - Way of the Warrior and Apocalypse Rising

VOY - Scorpion and Year of Hell

VOY - Drone and Dark Frontier

ENT - Broken Bow and The Expanse

ENT - The Xindi, Azati Prime and Damage

ENT - The Council, Countdown and Zero Hour

ENT - Demons and Terra Prime

Is that right? I had no idea.

Yeah the ones they did were Fathom events showings, to showcase the remasters. I didn't see any of the TNG ones, but I remember seeing The Menagerie. There were about five people in the audience, and I was disappointed that there weren't any souvenirs for sale.

I'd be down with The Naked Time followed by Tomorrow is Yesterday just for grins since they were allegedly conceived as a two parter.

Several episodes (mainly from TNG) have had one night theatrical releases in theaters.

In Australia, the two parts of "The Menagerie" had a one-night presentation at our beautiful State Theatre in Sydney, to celebrate the return of TOS to primetime TV in 1981, for the first time for the whole series in colour.

In 2007, Australian capital cities had theatre premiere nights to celebrate the release of TOS Season One in HD.

Theatres celebrated TNG's 25th anniversary in 2012 with "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore" on the big screen.

Because TOS didn't get a complete repeat run (after its first airing) Down Under, Star Trek Marathons ran monthly in a theatre from the mid 70s until 2000, but these were not sanctioned by Paramount.

Far out, man! I had to look up the theater but seeing anything in such a place would be incredible.

Thanks a million for sharing. I'd love for studios do to things like this again.

Sydney's State Theatre?

It's also where Sydney saw the gala Australian premieres of ST II and ST IV - and two of William Shatner's "Live!" shows:

The HD screening of "The Menagerie" in 2007 was at the just-as-opulent Hayden Orpheum in the Sydney suburb of Cremorne, which also screened - at my request - "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" for its 40th anniversary in 2019!
