The zombie apocalypse

According to an article in the Huffington Post, that apocalypse was supposed to have started about 6 or 7 hours ago (6 PM on the International Date Line). Sky's still blue, CNN's not reporting on major catastrophes, Wills and Kate got back from the Seychelles OK, and last I heard there are no plans to preempt Doctor Who tonight. So that's that then.

Still, if I see a living dead walking down the street I'll know just what to do.

Hilarious :guffaw:

Water (1 gallon per person per day)
I gallon?! wtf. Can get by on much less (I know, have done it).
Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)
Yes, some...and steal/kill rest...
Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)
Doubt most over-the-counter meds are going to help. Again, I'd rather raid pharmacy for something a LOT stronger...
Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)
OK
Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)

Change of clothes? soap? wtf!!! Not going to kill you...
Important documents (copies of your driver’s license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)
:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:
First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane)

They're just taking the piss now...

And nowhere do they mention arming yourself...number one in my book...

i had asked some guys i worked with about their zombie apocalypse plan for survival.
one said he'd just get really stoned and just let the zombies come for him.
another said (probably joking) that he'd take a group of his friends to his dads submarine and use his friends as a source of food.
everyone else's response was pretty standard, try and hold out in a building like a mall or grocery store.

Phew. I'm not hanging out in the same bunker as you!

I would definitely flee to higher ground towards the mountains/forest area of the Pacific Northwest. Bring a few guns, plenty of ammo, maybe a Broadsword stolen from one of those cutlery stores at the mall. Or better yet a machete from a surplus store. Using that would be the last resort.

^yeah, those swords in the cutlery stores are just pot metal, can't put an edge on them and they would bend in half if you tried to hit them on something. Go to a ren fair to find a sword that can actually be used.

I might also refer to this:

WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK!: MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF AN OUTBREAK OF ZOMBIE INFECTION

This one's a little less tongue in cheek, and doesn't give us us good odds. Basically, to stand a chance, we would need to go on the offense, quick and hard, to keep the world from being overrun in very short order. No bunkering or hiding away if you want a chance to surviving in the long run.

An outbreak of zombies infecting humans is likely to be disastrous, unless extremely aggressive tactics are employed against the undead. While aggressive quarantine may eradicate the infection, this is unlikely to happen in practice. A cure would only result in some humans surviving the outbreak, although they will still coexist with zombies. Only sufficiently frequent attacks, with increasing force, will result in eradication, assuming the available resources can be mustered in time.

Furthermore, these results assumed that the timescale of the outbreak was short, so that the natural birth and death rates could be ignored. If the timescale of the outbreak increases, then the result is the doomsday scenario: an outbreak of zombies will result in the collapse of civilisation, with every human infected, or dead. This is because human births and deaths will provide the undead with a limitless supply of new bodies to infect, resurrect and convert. Thus, if zombies arrive, we must act quickly and decisively to eradicate them before they eradicate us.

Speaking of Zombie Apocalypses, how's World War Z coming? Back in Development Hell, or proceeding?

In any case, the original article as meant to highlight general guidelines for basic disaster preparedness.... The items listed are things you would seriously need in the even of some terrible natural disaster, like major earthquakes, hurricanes, etc, where you'd be out of contact with civilization for several days, but the world at large would be OK.

In the event of a global apocalypse, like a zombie attack, the only people even remotely prepared for that will be those insane survivalists out in the boonies stockpiling weapons to overthrow the government, since, as far as they're concerned, they're already living in a post apocalyptic scenario. Despite our armchair quarterbacking of 'I'll just get me a sword and kill all comers', I doubt most, if any of us, would make it past one or two encounters with the undead before we met with a gristly end. Unless you're a leftie, in which case, you'll probably run afoul of the true survivalists and get yourself lynched or fed to the zombies as distraction/entertainment. ;-)
