The Year in Reading so Far for you..........

label

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Just out of curiosity I thought I'd start a thread and get a sense for how many books my fellow B(B)S'rs have read to this point in the year so far and if you're on track for your goal, what your favorite book and least favorite book have been so far.......might help some get an idea of what to read and what not and see how we compare with each other.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)

What's been your favorite book this year so far?

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year

I need to check something at home before I post my answers, but for now, I'll put up the thread.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)
no goal

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
The Last Continent - an old pratchett novel I somehow missed first time round

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?
Seize the Fire

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year
Not much new and of interest to me, so a lot of books were older ones I'd not picked over the years for one reason or another.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)
The past three years I've read over 150 books each, so I'd like to keep that up.

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
My "Picks of the Month" have been thus far:
- The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. Of Nantucket. Comprising the Details of a Mutiny and Atrocious Butchery on Board the American Brig Grampus, on Her Way to the South Seas, in the Month of June, 1827. With an Account of the Recapture of the Vessel by the Survivers; Their Shipwreck and Subsequent Horrible Sufferings from Famine; Their Deliverance by Means of the British Schooner Jane Guy; the Brief Cruise of This Latter Vessel in the Antarctic Ocean; Her Capture, and the Massacre of Her Crew Among the Group of Islands in the Eighty-Fourth Parallel of Southern Latitude; Together with the Incredible Adventures and Discoveries Still Further South to Which That Distressing Calamity Gave Rise by Edgar Allen Poe
- The Mummy!: A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century by Jane (Webb) Loudon
- The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel

All are works of 19th-century proto-science fiction (well, Purple Cloud is 1901) that I've been reading for my eventual dissertation. That stuff rocks!

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?
The most disappointing book was definitely Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman by Walter M. Miller, Jr. with Terry Bisson, the very tepid followup to A Canticle for Leibowitz.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?
10. Which is WAY less than usual; I usually read about 10 books a month, but I've been working on some really long ones (Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle) and dealing with a remarkable parade of random bullshit in my real life.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)
Finish all the Trek books Marco edited that I haven't yet read (Crucible, String Theory, Immortal Coil, Distant Shores); read all the new Trek books as they come out; finish the last book of the Baroque Cycle & also Stephenson's newest, Anathem; read the Miles Vorkosigan, Mistborn, WWW, and Song Of Ice & Fire series (in some order or other); various other random standalones

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
The second book of the Baroque Cycle, The Confusion. The first book was a real slog at times, but the second one just kicked ass start to finish.

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?
Nothing has been bad, I've chosen well. The lowest I've read is Paths Of Disharmony, but I still give that a solid 8/10.

Finally answering my own poll.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)
I'd like to hit 100ish but I'm more likely to end up in the 70ish range.....

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
Duma Key - that one really stuck with me......it's not like it bowled me over when I read it, but looking back, I really, really enjoyed that book.......weird, eh?

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?
A Time to Die - clumsy, fan fiction-y

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year

What was interesting for me this year was reading through the "A Time to Series" & "Death in Winter" and getting part of the way caught up with everything. I also enjoyed my Stephen King and Ted Dekker books as is the norm for me, but I've really enjoyed the TNG serial format so far and look forward to getting all the way caught up.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?
I'm not really sure how many books I've actually read since the new year, so I'm guessing here. Probably somewhere between 10-20.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)
I hope to keep up with the new Trek releases, and I hope to catch up on The Dresden Files, and True Blood/Southern Vampire and Discworld series. I also want to start and hopefully catch up on the A Song of Ice and Fire, Mercy Thompson, Hollows and Otherworld series. I'm also going to work on reading a whole ton of classics, some historical and straight realistic fiction stuff.

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
My favorites have been the Discworld novel Mort (the first book focusing on Death), Club Dead (the third True Blood book) Grave Peril (the third Dresden Files book) and ST: TNG Immortal Coil.

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?
Probably the novelisation of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I like the movie, but the book was just kinda flat.

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year
My Nook has allowed me to expand my reading horizons alot more quickly than I would have otherwise.

I've read way too few books this year, way behind on my aim for the year.

OTOH, I'm ahead on my publication schedule, so that's not too bad.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Maskerade (Discworld #18) by Terry Pratchett

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year

So far, a lot less Trek then I expected.

What's been your favorite book this year so far?
My favorites have been the Discworld novel Mort (the first book focusing on Death)

That's good to hear....... Mort is the next Discworld novel I've got queued up when I hit that series again.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?

Haven't really counted, as I'm not sure whether to count books I've read for research. Probably not enough novels...

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)

I don't have any specific goals on that

What's been your favorite book this year so far?

Kraken, by China Mieville

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?

Haven't read any bad ones so far, but we're only four months in...

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year

I'd totally forgotten how interesting and underused the Martian Manhunter is. Wouldn't mind writing for him someday.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?

Only four new books (Rough Beasts of Empire, Paths of Disharmony, Indistinguishable From Magic, and the Dresden Files book Changes).

I also re-read the TNG relaunch, from Resistance up through Losing the Peace.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)

No set goals. I shoot for at least 2-3 books per month. I will need to start finding some new series and books this year so I'm curious to see what I ultimately end up reading.

What's been your favorite book this year so far?

Changes. I love Dresden. The new Trek releases have been merely 'okay'.

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?

Rough Beasts of Empire. Not thrilled with execution of the story and really not happy with the creative direction taken with some of the DS9 characters who appear in the book.

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year?

My re-read of the TNG relaunch was quite enjoyable. I think the novels flowed pretty well together. I remember not enjoying Greater Than the Sum too much the first time around, but I quite liked it the second time through.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?

Only nine so far.

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)

More than last year (30).

What's been your favorite book this year so far?

One of Our Thursdays is missing (although it's not quite on the same level as previous Thursday Next novels IMO)

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?

Star Trek: The Children of Kings.

books I've read thus far this year are :

articles of the federation
death in winter
before dishonor
greater than the sum
gods of night
mere mortals ( currently on )

plan to read all the way to IFM and then DTI.

so far I have loved every thing I have read. after I am done with tng I plan to go onto deep space nine . this is going to be all about star trek this year. no favorites yet.

Something I forgot to add that I was interested in hearing what others did was which online site you use (if any) to track your reading/library/reviews.

I personally use Shelfari and "I'm Reading". Shelfari because I really like the UI and it's easy to use and it's integrated with Amazon. The only reason I use "I'm reading" is because it's integrated with Facebook.

I use Shelfari too. I was actually introduced to it by the other posters here.

So how many Novels/Books have you read to date this year?

I don't keep count, but probably in the range of 50-60

What is your goal of Books to Read this year? (if any)

No set goal, just as long as it keeps me busy as I go to and from work.

What's been your favorite book this year so far?

A tie between the comprehensive One Minute to Midnight (a very detailed story of the Cuban Missile Crisis) and several books by Terry Pratchett.

What's been your least favorite book this year so far?

I tried a few Trek books and was mostly unimpressed. Battle for Betazed and another one about androids (Immortal something or other?) are a couple I can remember.

Anything else you found interesting about your reading experience this year

I discovered Discworld! Can't believe it took me this long, but I'm absolutely charging through the series, thanks to my well-stocked local library. They're brilliant.

Immortal Coil? It really amazes me how different people's tastes are, because that is one of my absolute all time favorite Trek books (and maybe even books in general). So, just out of curiosity what didn't you like about it?
