I really liked the episode. Was it perfect? No, but it felt the most like the X Files to me. At least the one that I remember. Glen did a good job respecting M & S and their history, their relationship and their son.

This was the first one to actually be directed like an original X-Files episode. It would fit right in somewhere between seasons 2 and 6 if it had to. Glen Morgan gets it.
John DeSantis played the Band Aid-Nose Man and he also played the Golem on Supernatural. He's making a good career out of Golem-like creatures.
I thought this episode was OK--very much like the monster-of-the-week episodes on the original series.

This episode reminded me of the Golem and the "homeowners association" monster of yesteryears, though the supernatural element was rather vague. So the Trashman was simply willed into existence?
I felt sorry for Scully when she lost her mother and she was faced with guilt for giving up her son William all those years ago. They continue to explore that dynamic. There are only two episodes left, so will there be a sense of closure or resolution? Even the human conspiracy hasn't been totally resolved.

Yeah. Tulpas as willed into existence. Most of the legends I've heard of are when several people put their thoughts and energy into creating something.
So this episode had been done before - "Arcadia" (6 x 15), the Tulpa being the monster of the week.
This time, Scully's thoughts over William mirrored the case they were working on. Her dying mother also reminded Scully of "taking responsibility" for William, and the fact that not seeing the problem (whether it's environmental issues or homelessness) did not necessarily make it disappear.
The monster of the week was rather underwhelming but everything else was golden. Since they've made so much of William I'm guessing that we may meet him in the finale.
The final episode is supposed to focus more on Scully than Mulder. It would be nice to get some closure for that storyline.
I really loved this episode, which was as tragic as last week's story was comedic.
The band-aid nose man (Band-Aid has to love that product placement
) was fairly effective, as far as monsters go. The instantaneous dismembering, the flies circling his head, the maggoty pus/snot/ooze, victims reacting to his noxious odor whenever he arrived -- Glen Morgan really brought the creepiness.
The passing of Mrs. Scully was devastating to see. When she spoke her final words ("My son is named William, too."), I just lost it. Wonderful stuff with Scully's talk about "small questions," the parallels of Charlie Scully (I'd totally forgotten about him!) & William, and the puzzling quarter necklace. It all felt very authentic and real to me.
[Best of all, we weren't subjected to the butt-face of Bill, Jr. and his disapproving scowls at Mulder.]
But the absolute highlight of the entire episode was Gillian Anderson. Her performance here was nothing short of amazing. She won an Emmy for her work in "Momento Mori" and she surpassed herself in this one. Her acting talent, like her beauty, is only getting better with age.
Oh, and all of the Mulder/Scully scenes had me grinning, ear to ear.

Found this one pretty dull myself. The Trash Man was an interesting concept, but the direction was so pedestrian and by the numbers that he never came across as all that terrifying, and the people he went after were so cartoonishly evil I had a hard time caring all that much what happened to them.
And I frankly have no memory of Scully's mother from the original show (or even of Scully being in a coma), so while Anderson did her best to make that storyline work, ultimately I just had no emotional connection with it whatsoever. And of course I continue to not care about the son Mulder and Scully gave up towards the end of the series (long after I had stopped watching).

Yea it would be. But it's a CC production, so I'm not counting on that happening any time soon.
Ratings have been stellar. I'm sure they'll be throwing some big money at the leads.
They are introducing Lauren Ambrose as Agent Einstein and Robbie Amell as Agent Miller next week, and after the preview I can't help but wonder if they're going to be possible replacements for Duchovny and/or Anderson if they won't come back again.
Have Duchovny or Anderson said anything about whether or not they are willing to continue? I know he's also the lead on Aquarius, but I haven't heard lately if she's doing anything else right now.

I just checked the article on Wikipedia and it did say that they are willing to come back, and that Carter has plans for more episodes.

I hope it comes back. I didn't realize how much I missed this show.
I'm pretty sure Aquarius is going to get one more season a the most. I think it's in some kind of weird state where they're contractually obligated to show it. Gillian still has another few episodes of the Fall to film, I think. Then, they can come back for another 6 episodes!
Yea hopefully Fox will pay well for the both of them. She seems to be hedging the most right now. Can't say I blame her on it though. On a side note, looking forward to the next season of Aquarius. Got hooked on it. It's been pretty good so far. And it's something good to tide me over until there are more X Files episodes.
Just hoping that Chris doesn't drag things out too much.
My only issue this season was with Founder's Mutation... it was so odd to see almost no connection or chemistry there. I was wondering why they played it that way. It was just jarring.

That was the my least favourite of the bunch yet but it was still solid. Did anyone else find it kinda weird that five minutes after Scully tells the artist that he is responsible vor what he created they just let him go. RWell, really nothing they could have charged him with or anything, it just felt a bit off structuraly...
I think her "you're responsible" accusation was pointed more at herself in that scene. She follows it with:
"You put it out of sight so it wouldn’t be your problem, but you’re just as bad as the people that you hate."
Her comment here can be seen as talking about her decision to give William up, with a strong dash of self-loathing thrown in.

The flashback to season 2 was striking. Mulder was so young back in the day.
