Exactly. I watched it as it aired, and I remember towards the end thinking that it had gone off the rails. The Super Soldier stuff seemed to come out of nowhere, but it's really a very natural extension of the mythology that had come before. When I watched the X-Files the whole way through on DVD a few years ago, the mythology made perfect sense. Maybe it's because I remembered everything from having watching it in a short period of time. Now I'm re-watching the series and am at the end of Season 8 and it's making sense again the second time through. It's my impression that most people who dislike the mythology are those who watched it as it aired. I can see how it can become very complicated and convoluted over 9 years rather than watching everything over a few months.
I always got the impression that the black oil was controlling the Greys. That's why there were aliens who had sewn their eyes and mouths shut to keep it out.Note too that the Black Oil and the Greys are two different species, with the latter appearing to be more benevolent (e.g., "The Unnatural," 6 x 19).
I had to work tonight, so I couldn't watch the new episode! Ugh.
I didn't realize they were doing the rest of these on Monday nights. That really bums me out.
Okay, I remember all that--but the new theory still doesn't explain the presence of the aliens in the first nine seasons--which Mulder witnessed first hand on multiple occasions. It would seem that there are still pieces to the puzzle left to put together. Are they hoping that this current season will lead to a renewal of the series or is this strictly a one off? I would be very happy with six to ten episode seasons after this.
Some of the aliens could be more alien looking hybrids. The Syndicate knew that Mulder was chasing aliens so he could find his sister, they could have arranged that he was more focused on that than the real people in charge to keep him off the trail.
The original series also muddied the alien mythology many times.
The aliens were called the colonists who were returning to Earth. They were once human but were mutated into greys by the black oil, they also had human slaves and left in the last ice age.
They now return and some of their slaves who are unaffected by the black oil became Rebels who dealt a crippling blow to the Syndicate and possibly the aliens plans for colonization behind the scenes. We should also consider that the Syndicates project included retro engineering alien technology to help humanity resist them, they were simply exploring all options throughout the series.
