The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter

Bob The Skutter

Complete Arse Cleft
In Memoriam
I've just noticed there's an updated and revised paperback edition of The Writer's Tale being released in January, with 300 pages of new material covering the specials and looking back at the first 3 series, too.

Amazon link here for any UK users who're interested.

Yes I'm going to pick this edition up since I missed out on the last one. It never did see the first edition in Chapters or any other book store here.

According to a very helpful young lady in Waterstones it's out on the 14th of January in paper back and I've put my order in as well as having a rather lengthy chat about NuWho with her. (And Firefly after shiney slipped out after hearing when it's out!!!)

Only retail outlets here in Canada I've ever seen carry it were comic shops (Warp One in Edmonton had a copy last month). I ended up Amazoning for a copy of the first edition.

I'm definitely going to pick up the second edition (again I'm assuming it'll have to be via mail-order). If it contains everything from the first book it'll be truly massive because the first edition was more than 500 pages and was already the record holder for longest single book ever dedicated to Doctor Who (fiction or non-fiction). I don't mind the double-dip because 300 pages is a whole second book as far as I'm concerned, and I'd buy it on its own. Plus the paperback is considerably cheaper than the first edition hardcover which had a cover price of something like $49.95 (Cdn) though Amazon charged about $10 less.

I'll be picking up a copy. I'm really looking forward to reading it. The couple of times I've browsed through it without buying (I'm the kind of shopper the booksellers must love!) I've found it interesting.

I might pick it up now its in paperback and with the added stuff. I suspect I'll find it very interesting, and possibly slightly irritating!

Why irritating? It's basically a long chat in email form with script extracts as they were written.

From bits I've seen it looks like it might be a touch self congratulatorty in places. Similar to how the confidentials can be sometimes. 90% of the time interesting, 10% of the time oh look how clever we are.

^Can't say I remember feeling that way while reading it, in fact I seem to remember there was a quite a bit of talking about how he feels stuff he's written is rubbish.

Really? I wasn't tempted to get it before, but now...

That said, it could feel even more irritating if he confesses he's written rubbish and it's made him wealthy.

It's not like "I've write rubbish and it makes me rich, muahahaha" more like "I threw it all out because it just wasn't working" or "I spent ages trying to think of a better way to do it." but that may just be me misremembering at this point.

I like it that he admits that he has does some rubbish work from time to time. I'm sure we all have bad days at the office. I know I do. I like hearing about the misfires as much as the successes. They used to do that in the Starlog TNG mag back in the day and I always found it interesting.

I really did find it interesting, parts where he'd talk about having the feeling he wanted to go out and get off his head because he was hating himself so much with a deadline looming and not writing a thing. It was just candid and open, and I liked that it wasn't just about the writing or the story it was about what he put himself through while writing.

No, you're remembering rightly. It's definitely the most straightforward and insightful look we've ever gotten into the making of the new series.

Yeah, I was surprised by how open it was.

Sign me up. I pretty much went through the first one non-stop.

Seemed like the first book was less a DW behind the scenes book and more a guide through how his mind works as a professional tv writer. But it was still addictive reading.

I really hope RTD apologizes for all that
"Secret Books of Saxon" nonsense
. If he honestly couldn't think of a better way to
bring the Master back
, so be it. But I really hope he knew it was shit when he wrote it.
