Fox should be trying to diversify their X-Men lineup. If Hugh Jackman decides to quit playing Wolverine or mainstream audiences get tired of his character the entire franchise is dead. The MCU had a similar problem with Robert Downey Jr., and Marvel handled it perfectly by milking Iron Man just enough to add a few more billion in the bank without relying on him exclusively. There's other characters who can pick up the slack if the MCU loses its star. The same cannot be said for The X-Men.

I wonder what they mean by "direct sequel?" I know the article says Mangold is returning and writing the treatment, but I wonder if this means more Japan, or at least more Yukio and Mariko?

Eh, time will tell.

The extended edition only being with the 3D version really annoys me. I understand it's on one of the 2D discs, but it still sucks for people who want to see the EE but don't have 3D. You shouldn't have to pay extra for something you don't have any interest in to be able to see something you want.
I also hate it when on the disc there is bonus material that I never watch. Can't I get just the film and pay less?

I started buying DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs because I knew that one day I would get a BR player and a better TV (Which I did), but I have no interest in a home 3D system.

I guess I can always use the 3D disk as a coaster for my beer...

Is a Wolverine sequel supposed to fit in the two year gap?
My first thought also. If the standard timeline we've seen so far is the one that leads into DOFP, it might be confusing to pick things up in the brighter future the FC cast will no doubt secure. Fitting a story into that two-year gap would indeed seem the most obvious route...

I thought that as well.
It could just be a stand alone that takes place 'x' amount of time from that gap, or from DOFP.

Opportunities for certain, glad it's going forward and likely to happen!!

They do sometimes release "bare bones" DVDs that are just the movie. Or if you don't mind not having a physical copy, there's always digital downloads.

I'm very curious to see what they'll do for Wolverine 3 or The Wolverine 2, whatever you want to call it. Is the two year gap you guys are talking about between The Wolverine and DoFP or The Last Stand and DoFP?

Bare bones is pretty much all they release on DVD these days. All the goodies go on the Blu-Rays.

The former. The mid-credits scene of The Wolverine, in which Wolves meets Xavier and Mags, begins with a "two years later" text. There's no way they'd do a movie set between TLS (between what?) and The Wolverine.

Anyhow, I think we can all agree that this upcoming film should be called...

X-Men Continuations: Wolverine - The Wolverine 2: Wolverine Returns

It's only logical. :p

The 2 year gap is mentioned at the end of The Wolverine and is essentially a textual moment in between the films two endings.
Wolverine prepares to fly home from Japan after the climatic battle---2years later---Logan is in a different airport and this is the teaser for DOFP. So the 2year gap is still within the confines of the film. That is where another solo outing could go.

I thought that 'Begins', 'Age' and 'Dark' were the new buzz words for sequels.

The Age of Wolverine Begins Darkly

Well I can't say I'm surprised that we will be getting a third Wolverine movie.

Hopefully it will be about Wolverine facing Omega Red in Russia! :D

That IGN reporter kept saying Brown and Orange which is just bizarre. How would anyone looking at the inset image behind him and even think the tan areas were orange?

I would like to have seen that scene, I'm guessing he opens the case on the plane as he prepares to leave Japan at the films end.
