"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Today The White Stripes officially disbanded, stating they wanted to preserve the band as it was, rather than go on. This isn't too much of a surprise seeing as they took a hiatus in 2007 and we really haven't heard anything since.

I'm not as big of a fan as I sued to be, preferring more "organic" music now, but they were one of the most important bands of my past so this is very much the end of an era for me.

Any other fans here? Discuss.

They're one of the only 00's bands that I liked, but they've have their day in the sun. However many albums they'd put out was enough.

Caught my surprise here, but I guess I'm not shocked. White Stripes have been one of my favorite bands this decade. Back when I couldn't point to anything else (aside from 90s groups and groups made from 90s members), they were sort of my saving grace to keep listening to music this decade. There's so much they do well considering how much they constrain themselves (and how little Meg White can actually drum ;) ).

I'm sure Jack White will continue to find things to do. I'm just glad this duo was together as long as it was.

Jack White produced his now-current wife's debut album and has a bunch of other projects he's working on.

^^ If not, then this? I bet you've heard one of the two at some point.

I had a nagging feeling that the White Stripes were over for some reason, so this is just the official word. Still, they were fun...

Cool, so I can download the mp3's legally now?

Yeah, I was wondering if that announcement meant that they were putting their music in the public domain.

Unless they released the music independently, it's highly unlikely they own the rights to the recordings, so I doubt they have any legal ability to do so.
