The Western Desolation

AGreed, I've flown to Cali more than a few times, each time I am reminded how empty this country really is. There is a LOT of land out there, a lot we can expand into. We choose to bunch ourselves up into big cities for some reason. There is a lot of room out there to build more big cities, if someone would start one up. They say we are overpopulated, but then I look at how much space there really is out there we could fill.

Water. We can barely make one City of Las Vegas work.

I think leaving open space is a possitive thing anyway. There should be no need to expand there just because it is there. At some point the human population has to come to the realizaion that we cna not continue to expans un-ended without it bitting us in the butt latter.

I'd suggest, leaving the desolation just the way it is.

I flew into San Francisco on my way to Vancouver and couldn't believe how much of an expanse surrounded the city. I could make out the odd town here and there but generally the place was empty!

Well technically San Francisco is surrounded by water on three sides so yeah its pretty much empty.

To the South the towns tend to be really small hamlets and there is the airport. To the North the area is very upper middle class with a lot of trees. Only to the East are there a lot of larger cities.

And then there's the hills and mountains. From high altitude, it's difficult to make out terrain elevations less than 5,000 feet. But those hills are where open spaces are and will continue (hopefully)to be that way.

I'm going out West to Utah later this week. Peace, quiet and nothing else, please. :)

Reminds me of when Hubby and I moved to Fresno.

I went out to find a Costco and was told "head west on Shaw." So I did, then turned around and asked for directions (there was no sign eassily visible for one not knowing where they were driving).

Hubby asked me, "If you didn't know where it was, how did you know you must've passed it?"

"I ran out of city!"

Nothing there. No buildings, orchards, farms...just land.

I had a friend that took a job in L.A. and had to move from Chicago. After he made the drive out there he told me he is no longer worried about overpopulation because there is a whole bunch of extra space between Chicago and L.A. for everyone.
