Whoa, I didn't even realize the show was back. The Walking Dead really snuck up on me. Haha. Anyway....
I got really upset for a second there because I was certain that one of my favorite characters was going to die...but that didn't happen, thank God. But I did actually cover my eyes a couple of times.
Although, one of those times was NOT the final Negan/Alpha scene.
Damn, that was gross! A human skin mask and a person who just fell in a pile of poo. How romantic .

Okay, I finally got a chance to watch. I thought it was going to be 97 minutes long, but they actually tacked on the premiere of Dispatches From Elsewhere (which was kind of mesmerizing).
This was a very unusual episode, with most of it taking place underground in very claustrophobic caves and caverns. I can certainly sympathize with Carol's discomfort. Not only was it a very tight and confined space, but the passages seemed to get narrower and twistier as time went on. I like it when they take us somewhere new like this-- it kind of reminded me of those spooky cemetery scenes a while back.
Daryl continued his conversion into leading man here, taking charge and becoming almost a father figure to Carol as her obsession with Alpha continues to wear her down-- he's come a long way since his introduction as an almost-feral backwoods hick. And his reaction after the explosion pretty much cinches that he's got feelings for Connie. He was ready to dig through that rubble with his bare hands, and he is not happy with Carol.
But I don't think Connie and Magna are dead yet, and Daryl will find them, or they'll find their own way out. There will be much drama to come around Carol's breakdown.
The question is, did she actually manage to destroy or bury the horde, taking away Alpha's super weapon? That will certainly end the stalemate, but will also likely plunge the communities into another war.
And, yeah, Negan and Alpha got it on. Sometimes sex scenes are not a good thing.

Without a horde, Alpha should be easy pickings, since her actual number of living members was never sold as being as large as the Saviors, and even they were defeated.

Agreed, but the showrunners knew they were going for the most strange/horrifying sex scene in TV history.
Mission accomplished.
Not with Rosita, nor does he deserve her. He has been communicating with some woman--presumably from the Commonwealth--but the 10B teaser had him attempting to kiss Rosita. He has no respect for her relationship with Father Gabriel, and that makes him a loser who needs to be put in his place one and for all.

Daryl: Brutal. He was close to killing Alpha, but for all of his resentment of Carol for getting them trapped in the cave, he was just as reckless in tracking / attacking Alpha. Look, I know bullets are not readily available, but Eugene knows how to make bullets. Between his skill and the wealth of leftover Savior weapons, few should ever walk around unarmed. Needless to say, Daryl would have delivered a major blow if he carried a gun.
Judith: She is never a letdown, and she did not waste a second shooting Beta. She's just as fearless as her older brother.
Alpha: For a moment, I thought she was hallucinating when Lydia spoke to her. With Alpha now keeling emboldened by surviving what should have been a lethal blow, only some sort of surprise attack will be able to finish her...but I do not see Lydia or Mary (Gamma) being bold enough to handle that job.
Lydia: Poor girl--her carved "Your way not only way" broken English is a reminder of how much her moron of a mother was incredibly derelict in her duties. It would be nice to see her not toss all of the goodwill (from Daryl) aside to become the next Alpha. It would be a waste not only for her, but for the effort Henry put into trying to reach her human side.
Father Gabriel / Rosita: they make a very hard pair. Gabriel was cold as ice with Mary/Gamma, but I believed he was far too confident in the ability to break someone who had so willingly adopted the life of a freak. Former Savior Laura was not convinced at all. Speaking of Laura, Beta slammed her into the bars of the cell. Was she knocked out or killed? I am glad they did not have the recent tension/battles drive a wedge between them.
Beta: I've posted it before, but I'm sick of this misfit; he has nothing else in the world, so he's thinks he's going to be a one-man monster-machine to take out an entire community. Such arrogance should be rewarded soon. ...and where did he get the bullet-proof vest from?
NOTES: Another tension-filled episode, rich in the character studies. Some wondered if TWD would not honor its landmark 10h year with an improvement in quality, but the showrunners have returned to the kind of consistent, top-shelf drama last seen during season 6.
GRADE: A.

Great episode this week. The scene with Gabriel and Rosita interrogating Gamma was really great particularly showing the more badass side of Gabriel that seems to be developing. The intense fight between Daryl and Alpha was fun to watch, especially the bit where it seemed Alpha was dying and she's visited by Lydia. That part really had me guessing as I thought for sure this was going to be Alpha's death scene. Beta stalking through Alexandria was cool to see, especially the bit where he kills the guys just after they were boasting "one on one the Whisperers aren't so tough." Judith shooting him was also a blast to see, despite it being kind of predictable.
By leaving her mother for dead and helping Daryl instead, Lydia seems to be choosing life in Alexandria instead, even to the point of being okay with them despite her treatment there saying "they're flawed, but they are human." While I doubt things are going to be much better for her there in the short term, Daryl will likely be putting more of an effort to defend her as will others such as Gabriel most notably.

Killed, as she was listed on Talking Dead's In Memoriam. A shame, she really was a promising character ever since she chose to surrender on behalf of the Saviors and even in the first part of ninth season she seemed to be one Savior who was putting an honest effort into cooperation. Then after the time jump we see she's definitely proved herself since she sits on the ruling council. There was definitely some interesting directions they could have continued to take the character. At the very least, I'd have thought she deserved a better death scene.
Okay, I understand that they wanted to make Beta formidable, but what are his advantages? Being a bit taller than others is not fighting skill. He just comes off like a wild brute, and that's exactly he kind of offensive apporach that should leave him wide open to be picked apart by a skilled fighter. At least that's the way it works in reality.
Agreed. I wanted her to continue being the polar opposite of Negan--the example of how the Savior worldview was a failure, but she could thrive under the right conditions. Too bad to see her go.
Well, in that particular scene he mostly had surprise going for him. Though I think the point they were going for in that scene was that the boastful Alexandrian was in fact not as tough as he was making himself out to be. Mind you, that was pretty obvious even before Beta showed up, given how much pride the Alexandrian was showing in beating up a teenage girl (Lydia).
That was a good episode, though it wasn't until she pulled her mask off that I realised it was Alpha! Genuinely thought that was it, that she was going to die in such an offhand way. but glad she isn't.
I know what people mean about Beta, he's just a hulking Undertaker type figure, and I guess he's sneaky with it but he shouldn't be Michael Myers or anything. Sneaking in and creating walkers behind the walls was a scarily good tactic though. (still amazes me anyone is ever alone in any settlement, what the hell happens if someone has an aneurysm?)

Well, re: Beta, there’s a reason they have weight classes in combat sports. Not that he should be invulnerable but there is something to be said for size and mass. Gotta say I had a smile though when he was going after Judith who I knew was going to be formidable match.
Until Talking Dead, I didn’t realize Thora Birch is Gamma, she looks so different, hell I can’t remember the last time I saw her without red lipstick. Samantha Morton really goes the extra mile with Alpha as well, elevating the role beyond the call of duty.
