The Voice USA: Season 2

This is NBC's big show and something that really grabbed me during it's first season last year, right up until the finale where the winner was a person who had had multiple chances to make it and never did.

This year has seen the show slide down hill. The show is definitely more geared to shoving stereotypes and "feel good" stories down our throats.

An example, Pip, a small white kid who looks like the boy next door, did a horrible job with a Killers song, and after being completely panned by fans, "America" voted him forward.

Christina Aguilera is possibly the worst judge I have seen on a reality show. I don't speak street, so when a song or singer is "DOPE!", not only do I not have a clue what you are talking about, it makes me think you have a few IQ points less than the average loaf of bread. She constantly nitpicks at the artists, calling one "one-dimensional", a statement I find hypocritical as Xtina (oh yeah, didn't you know, she's street!) has done the same kind of pop music for her entire career.

And what is with NBC and Carson Daly? He's Robert Beltran-wooden!

However, there are some saving points of this show. The banter and comedy of the other three judges, Blake Shelton, CeeLo Green, and Adam Levine is awesome and funny. The three are actually coaching, not giving souless comments to try and revive a dead career like Aguilera.

There is talent on this season (Katrina Parker, Jamar, Tony Luca, Chris Mann) but I doubt any of them outside of Jamar has a chance at the final. We will end up with the ending NBC wants, I figure.

Rant over.

I also feel that the quality has gone down somewhat this season, but I still think it is better than the rest of the singing competition shows that exist on TV right now. Christina's comments to Tony Lucca the other night were quite harsh, basically coming right out and saying that the only reason he made it on the show was because he has the backing of other famous Mouseketeers like Justin Timberlake, not because of his actual singing talent. Now, I don't think that Tony is one of the best on the show and he bores me a little, but I hardly think that Christina's comments were warranted. I do like the other three coaches much more than Christina.

I would say my favorite right now is Juliet Simms. She did an amazing job with Roxanne the other night. I actually have never much liked that song, but I really loved her version. I certainly wouldn't mind if she won the show, though I think there are some other great singers in there as well. Unfortunately for Adam, I don't think his team is all that great this time around. I loved them all in the auditions, but their subsequent performances weren't very good. The only exception is Mathai, who is a very skilled and unique singer (even though the song she sang the other night was a terrible choice). After she got through, it was irrelevant to me who else America chose, because they all did equally bad.

For me, Cee Lo's team is the best this season. All of them have been amazing. On Blake's team, I like Erin Willett and Jermaine Paul, but do not like the voices of Jordis Unga or RaeLynn, who quite obviously got through on her cute looks. She did terrible with that Maroon 5 song.

I like everyone on Christina's team, but with the exception of Jesse Campbell, I don't think they have a chance of winning against Cee Lo's team members.

We'll see how it goes! I look forward to next week's performances.

The show falls apart as soon as the audience starts voting. It becomes a popularity contest instead of a singing competition. I'd almost rather they have the Coaches just cut the weakest voice every week and only let the audience vote for the final winner. Star power/stage presence/personality/whatever is important and it makes sense for the label to want to save that contract for someone that can sell records, but the voting undermines the whole premise of the show.

Juliet, Jamar & Mathai were the standouts this week. Last week wasn't quite as impressive. I wouldn't be surprised to see a half dozen careers launched from this season though, even folks who were cut early like those rocker brothers who clearly have a lot of talent but weren't the right fit for the show.

Once the voting begins, it becomes Idol with better judges.

I still find nothing redeeming about Juliet or Mathai. Juliet absolutely butchered "Roxanne." Mathai is like everyone else you hear on the radio with the gimmick that her Indian parents want her to be a doctor. This is The Voice, not Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical.

Jamar is legitimately good from what we've seen so far and The "One-Dimensional" Tony Luca (proving Christina has no idea what she's doing) along with the opera singer Chris Mann and Lindsay Pavao are the talent. Not Pip or Juliet or Mathai.

Lindsay is definitely one of my favorites and I like Tony Luca, but Mann's talents aren't suited to the music he is singing on this show and a lot of it comes off as forced. I expect he will be gone soon.

Glad to see that even with a country song and a high school choir in the same act tonight, Christina managed to be half naked.

^
Yeah I thought that was an odd fashion choice. Plus the choir was so far in the background, in the shadows, that I didn't get the point of bringing them on at all.

Thought Xstina's elimination choice was a bad call.

So explain to me how Christina got to whimper and fawn over her two candidates and we were forced to watch Carson Daly kiss Justin Bieber's ass while Blake has to rush through his, while the credits roll and his eliminated contestant doesn't get to say anything. Everyone should get equal time, no matter if they are a washed up Mouseketeer or anyone else.

I'm surprised to hear you say you don't like Juliet or her version of Roxanne - that was probably my favorite performance of anyone on any singing competition show. It was just simply amazing.

Christina made a bizarre choice. You could tell everyone was shocked because the crowd was actually dead silent for the first time. He was clearly the most talented singer, but I believe the real reason she cut him was because he would not win the show - a young and soulful black dude won last year, and I don't think the show would let it happen again. I think Christina knew that they would probably push for a a pretty white girl this time around, so she chose accordingly. I mean, come on, we all know the producers have a lot of say in how these things turn out, "America's vote" or not.

I think Blake definitely made the right choice. I have no idea what anyone saw in RaeLynn, she is a terrible singer. She sounds like someone doing a caricature of country instead of actually being a country singer. I liked Lindsay at first, but now she isn't doing very well, and chooses terrible songs. I like Erin Willett and Chris Mann a lot.

I look forward to hearing Cee Lo's team next week.

RaeLynn needs to grow up and out of her attempt to sound unique, but she has a career ahead of her. With a little maturation, some proper coaching and a little help from the magic of technology she could easily be a star.

Chris did a bit better this week but he still isn't doing himself any favors with his song choices and neither is Lindsay.

Speaking of trying to sound unique, what is with all the female singers(other than the power singers) trying to sound unique to the point of actually making their performances bad in many cases. Bjork, Corinne Bailey Rae, Feist, Regina Spektor, etc. seem to have instilled in a new generation of singers that the only way to be successful is to try to sound as different as possible. The lesson that they seem to have lost in the process is that you have to sing music that suits that quirky vocal style. If you've tailored your voice for folky coffee-club music, then you should be singing that, if you've tailored it for reggae-rock, then sing reggae-rock. A lot of these girls have wonderful voices and would be blowing the audience away if they would just tone down their "style" and sing music they're suited for.

I agree with everything you've said. I do wonder how much choice they really get in these songs. A couple of weeks ago that reggae singer let it slip that at least for the last-chance performances, the song choice was extremely limited and didn't include anything in her style. As for the regular performances, they present it as a joint decision between the coach and the singer, but who knows if the available choices are limited there as well.

Assuming the coaches and singers have total control over the song choice, I think they are trying too hard to "push yourself," as they like to say. They keep choosing something that is specifically NOT in their normal style, to try and "grow" and "develop as artists." Christina seems especially obsessed with this. Instead of seeing them purposely choosing songs they aren't comfortable with, I'd love to see them choose songs that they are perfectly suited for and where they can really showcase their talents. If that's an opera-esque or coffee house tune every week, so be it.

Someone needs to explain to these singers (and the coaches if this is their doing) that not every single lyric needs to be dragged out and extended. It's horrible to listen to.

Pip and Tony Luca playing Rock, Paper, Scissors? How staged is that?

"The Pipsters?" Making Justin Bieber fans look like adults since last month.

Finally Chessa has learned to use her voice and not sound like a lawnmower that couldn't start with those short vocal bursts. Dress her like a woman and have her belt with that voice and she might actually be worth this contract.

Spamming away, but...

Why the hell is Juliet wearing massive friggin wings? I thought this show was "The Voice", not which coach can dress up their singer in the most asinine costume or which coach can put as many dancers in their weird choreography as possible!

The wings are a mystery as is the change in her hair. I didn't even know it was her in the first few seconds of the team number.

Glad to see Adam woke up and saw Pip was nothing special, now he has to figure out that Mathai is like 95% of whats on radio daily and deserves to go home next.

And explain why we must waste time going to Christina whatever for useless comments from the Sprint Lounge? There is never anything useful said and it just wastes time in a show that already has horrible pacing.

If Chessa keeps singing like this, she might make the finals.

No offense meant Danny99, but it sounds like you really hate the show from your comments, so why do you still watch it?

I'm fine with how things turned out this week. I still think Cee Lo's team is the best, and Adam's team is the worst. Katrina is nice, and I appreciated Tony Lucca's take on the Britney song, but neither of them are terribly good singers in my view. They are just average...very forgettable. However I think both Jamar and Juliet are quite good, I could even see myself buying an album of Juliet's (I don't buy many albums). I agree though about the wings, that was...bizarre! I can appreciate some great stage production, but it didn't really make any sense with the song choice.

It's kind of crazy how fast these singers are whittled down, with there now only being two on a team. I think that the winner will likely be from Blake or Cee Lo's team. Lindsey could be in the running if she makes better song choices. And I really like Chris Mann, but I'm surprised that America has voted him through this far. He hasn't made the best song choices either, and his classical opera style isn't exactly popular today. I would be happy if he won, but I don't think he will.
