'The Visitor' (DS9) Comparisons

I thought 'The Visitor' was one of the best episodes in Trek in terms of emotional involvement. I was wondering if anyone thought there were some other contenders. I liked Voyager's 'Real Life' but felt that was more emotionally manipulative. What do y'all think?

The Visitor is the absolute best when it comes to emotional involvement.

The Inner Light (TNG) and Similitude (ENT) are similarly powerful episodes to me.

Real Life is okay, but it would have worked better if we'd seen the Doc use the program in earlier episodes, to give the 'tragedy' more buildup.

For whatever reason The Visitor never felt all that real to me. I know I'm in the minority on this..

The Inner Light, however, still gets me every time. It's possible my favorite episode.

DS9's Duet is a different but still emotionally powerful episode, especially Kira's epiphany at the end.

Both The Inner Light and Tapestry get me every time, just like The Visitor.

On a non-Trek note, The Shrine from Stargate Atlantis invokes the same emotions for me.

Like everyone else, I agree with The Inner Light, Tapestry, and The Visitor. But on an outside the box way of thinking, Half a Life and Dark Page both get me. Strange because I have never been fond of Lwaxana as a character.

I agree with you on both statements - but I love the Picard storyline in Family, too.

Hmmm. I dunno. I think Far Beyond the Stars is up there with The Visitor.

Measure of a man (TNG) was the most emotionally involved episode for me.

Duet (DSN) also got me a bit teary eyed.

In addition to Duet, Inner Light, The Visitor, and Tapestry, I'd nominate Ties of Blood and Water. I'm not sure a Voyager episode was ever as involving as any of the aforementioned.

While, I liked FBtS and felt the gimmick was neat to tell a different type of story, I kinda felt the racism theme was a bit too gratuitously over the top for my tastes.

I've always though that VOY's "Living Witness" and "Timeless" were the series' strongest emotional outings. I'll second the mention of TNG's "Family," even though I usually skip over the Worf and Wesley plots. The aftermath of the Picard fight in the vineyard is one of Trek's finest scenes.

My favorite episode is "Sarek," and it's primarily because it inspires such strong emotional involvement. Both Lenard and Stewart sell the high-impact scenes 100%.

Not so agreed on Half a Life--but Dark Page? Yeah, I don't care about all the things other people say about it...that was the episode where I was actually able to regard Lwaxana as a serious character.

And Astraea--on "Ties of Blood and Water"...absolutely. I cried SO hard at the end of that episode!!!

(AND also wanted to punch Kira in the face during the time when she was being so...CRUEL. And that she had the nerve to act like THAT right to Tekeny's face!!!!!!!!!!)
